Welcome to this lesson on Johnny Mars' Easy Money.
This is the first single released from his 2014 album Playland, which is just a fantastic album.
It's got some really cool things on it.
This is probably the most well-known song, so we're going to go through all the pieces of it.
I'll have an abbreviated playthrough where I just play the key elements, and then we'll take a look at each piece.
So let's get started.
[D]
[F#m] [D]
[A] [D]
[F#] [A] [D]
[F#] [A] [D]
[F#] [A] [D]

[F#m] [D]
[F#m] [E]
[F#] [A] [D]
[B] [F#m] [D]
[D] [C]
The opening chord riff is played [F#m] in the intro and during the choruses.
The chorus is actually coming before the verses in the song.
It's based on an F-sharp minor chord and a D chord.
It's important to get the upstrokes and the downstrokes right.
So slowly, you're going up, down, up, down, up, down.
[N] As you're hitting that last upstroke, what you do is you take your pinky off the G string at the 11th fret.
So you're [F#m] playing
Then you take that pinky and you put it on the B string at the 12th fret, and you [F#] play another upstroke.
[F#m] [F#]
[A#] Once you've done that, you move up one fret to the 10th fret, and you make a D chord, as shown below.
And you just play upstroke, downstroke, upstroke, downstroke, upstroke.
[D]
Then you [G#] put your pinky on that B string at the 12th fret, and you [Bm] play another upstroke.
[G] Then you remove your pinky and [D] play
[E] Then you put your pinky back [Bm] on, another upstroke, [D] and go back to the F-sharp minor chord [F#m] that's here at the 9th fret.
So the whole thing
I'll move up a little closer.
The whole thing, slowly, is
[B]
[D] [Bm] [D]
[Bm] [F#m] Okay?
In the song, it's played once before the second guitar comes in.
But there are two guitars in the song, so one of them is [D] usually playing that throughout the chorus parts and the interludes.
Okay, so while the first guitar is playing [F#m] this
[D] [F#m]
After it [B] plays it the first time, the second guitar comes in, and it's playing octaves.
And those octaves [A] go
[D] [F#]
So [G] when you're playing the octaves, [D#] obviously you're playing two strings apart here, and you're muting the string in between with this finger, so that you [F#] only get the two octave notes.
So [B] you're starting with an F [F#]-sharp octave, so that's 6th string or low E string at the [N] 2nd fret, and D string at the 4th fret.
And you play it down [F#]-up-down-up.
And then you move up to A octave at the [A] 5th fret, and play down-up.
And you skip over, you [B] move over a set of strings to the 5th, you know, the A string and [Em] the G string.
And you move up to the 7th fret and the 9th fret.
[G] And it's an E octave, and you just [E] play one upstroke.
And then you move [B] down two frets, and have a D octave, and play up [D]-down-up-down.
And [F#] down to this C-sharp, which is just [C#] one fret down, with an upstroke.
And then you repeat [D] that.
One upstroke, and then [C#]
back [F#] to the F-sharp.
[A] So slowly, [F#] that whole thing is
[D]
[F#] You play [N] that while this chorus, you know, that's easy money, is going on.
And right before you get to the verse proper, where he's singing, you know, that's no way to serve.
You play it slightly differently, because when you come down to this F-sharp octave, you play it four times like this.
So it's
[D]
[F#] Then you go into the verse proper.
