[G#m] [D] [E] Hey guys, it's Karl Brown for Guitar Lessons 365.com.
Today we're going to learn how to play Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.
So this one's an easy one.
It's not going to take very long I hope.
We do have one bar chord so hopefully you guys can play bar chords.
There's bar chords on the site though.
There's lessons for those at least to help you get there.
So check out GuitarLessons365.com.
If you have problems with bar chords, I will solve it for you.
So let's start here.
We got a D major chord.
For the verse, it's just two chords.
[D] We have a D major.
We're in standard tuning here.
We have a D major to [G] a G major.
All right, about as [E] easy as it gets.
Now the picking pattern he's doing here, he's going to do three downstrokes and [F] three upstrokes.
So hold that D again.
I'm going to start on the open [D] D string.
Downstroke, then a downstroke on the G string, then a downstroke on the B string.
Now you're to the high E string.
You're going to do an upstroke now and come back down with another upstroke and one more.
[Em] So that's three down, [D] three up.
So you do that pattern twice on each [G] chord.
Now we're going to switch to the G chord.
Now same [C#m] pattern but it's played [G] on different strings because obviously this is a six string root chord.
So we have the low E string I'm picking, then [D] a downstroke on the open D, the [G] open G.
So those are the three downstrokes.
And then once again, three upstrokes on the top three strings.
Repeat.
And [D] just rotate between that D and the G for the whole verse.
[G] All right, then we have a little transition between [D] this [Em]
and the next chord, which is the chorus.
So that little [G] transition is just, [D] [G] so that's, you're holding [Em] this G.
You don't need to hold the whole [G] thing anymore.
[D] [G] You just have one finger, third fret on the low E string, downstroke [D] and then pick the
open D and [G] the open G.
Now move down to the second fret [F#] on the sixth string and then [G] do the same picking.
So we have this.
[D] [G] Now you're to the chorus, which sounds [Em] like this.
[A]
[Em] So that's just off this E minor chord to an [A] A major chord.
All [G#] right, so the same picking pattern.
Obviously the strings have changed a little bit.
So [Em] we're going to go through those strings.
For the E minor, the low E string, the D and the G string.
So we have for the downstrokes and then the upstrokes are going to be on the top three strings again.
Now switch [A] over to the A.
Now we have three downstrokes starting on the open A string,
then the D string and then the G.
And once again, the upstrokes on the top three strings.
And [Em] just rotate between those two chords.
[A]
All right, so just [F] concentrate on the picking for each chord and then start putting them
together and then it's pretty easy after a while.
So now we have another kind of bridge section of the song, which the barre chord is coming
here and we're going to be able to strum this now.
So it's going to [F#] sound like this.
[Bm]
[F#]
[Bm] [F#]
[Bm]
[C]
[G]
[C] [G] [Am]
[G] All right, so barre across the second fret [F#] here, full barre.
You're going to play first chord is an F sharp dominant seven chord.
So that's played with full barre, [C#] fourth [C#m] fret on [A#m] the A string, third fret on [F#] the G string.
[E] So that note in the middle there is held by [F#] the barre.
[C#m] All right, so you got that barre chord going.
Good news is we're going to switch to a B minor barre chord, but you've already got
the barre there.
[Bm] So you just have to lay your fingers now.
You're going to strum five strings [E] now, [Bm] starting from the fifth string, that B.
It's a B minor
chord, fourth fret on the D and G string, third fret there on the B string.
[F#] So just go between those two chords three times.
[Bm] All [A] right, so after you've gone from the F sharp [C] seven to the B minor, it then goes to
a C.
So it feels good when you get there, no more.
So we have C to [G] a G, back [C] to that C, a little bass [B] line.
[Bm] Just playing the second fret there on the A [B] string, [Am] which takes us to the A minor, a
little [C] transition note,
[B] [Am]
[D] and that takes us back.
[G]
[G#] All right, so it's simple, but highly effective.
It's a great song.
So I hope you guys enjoyed learning.
I'll see you again soon for GuitarLessons365.com.

[D] [G] You just have one finger, third fret on the low E string, downstroke [D] and then pick the

So we have this.
[D] [G] Now you're to the chorus, which sounds [Em] like this.
[A]

[Bm]
[F#]
[Bm] [F#]

[G] All right, so barre across the second fret [F#] here, full barre.
You're going to play first chord is an F sharp dominant seven chord.
So that's played with full barre, [C#] fourth [C#m] fret on [A#m] the A string, third fret on [F#] the G string.
[E] So that note in the middle there is held by [F#] the barre.

_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ All right, then we have a little transition between [D] this [Em] _ _

So that little [G] transition is just, [D] _ [G] _ so that's, you're holding [Em] this G.
You don't need to hold the whole [G] thing anymore.
_ [D] _ [G] You just have one finger, third fret on the low E string, downstroke [D] and then pick the
open D and [G] the open G.
Now move down to the second fret [F#] on the sixth string and then [G] do the same picking.
So we have this. _
[D] _ _ [G] _ Now you're to the chorus, which sounds [Em] like this.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Em] So that's just off this E minor chord to an [A] A major chord. _ _
All [G#] right, so the same picking pattern.
Obviously the strings have changed a little bit.

So we have for the downstrokes and then the upstrokes are going to be on the top three strings again. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Now switch [A] over to the A. _ _

then the D string and then the G.
And once again, the upstrokes on the top three strings.
_ _ _ And [Em] just rotate between those two chords.
_ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
_ _ _ All right, so just [F] concentrate on the picking for each chord and then start putting them
together and then it's pretty easy after a while.
So now we have another kind of bridge section of the song, which the barre chord is coming

So it's going to [F#] sound like this. _ _ _

_ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F#] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Bm] _ _
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ [Am] _
_ _ _ [G] All right, so barre across the second fret [F#] here, full barre.
You're going to play first chord is an F sharp dominant seven chord.
So that's played with full barre, [C#] fourth [C#m] fret on [A#m] the A string, third fret on [F#] the G string.
[E] So that note in the middle there is held by [F#] the barre. _ _ _ _ _
_ [C#m] All right, so you got that barre chord going.
Good news is we're going to switch to a B minor barre chord, but you've already got

[Bm] So you just have to lay your fingers now.
You're going to strum five strings [E] now, [Bm] starting from the fifth string, that B.
It's a B minor
chord, fourth fret on the D and G string, _ _ third fret there on the B string.
_ _ _ _ [F#] So just go between those two chords three times.
_ _ [Bm] All [A] right, so after you've gone from the F sharp [C] seven to the B minor, it then goes to
a C.
So it feels good when you get there, no more.
So we have C to _ _ [G] a G, _ _ _ back [C] to that C, _ _ a little bass [B] line.
[Bm] Just playing the second fret there on the A [B] string, [Am] which takes us to the A minor, _ a
little [C] transition note, _
_ _ [B] _ [Am] _ _ _ _
[D] and that takes us back.
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ [G#] All right, so it's simple, but highly effective.
It's a great song.
So I hope you guys enjoyed learning.
