Hey guys, it's [Gb] Karl Brown from [A] GuitarLessons365.com.
Today we have a quick one.
[Bb] We're going to learn how to play Where [A] Did You Sleep Last Night, kind of [B] Nirvana's version
from their Unplugged album.
[Gb] So we're basically going to have just like three different things to learn here.
[Dbm] One main riff, [B] one variation of it, which is done at the very [D] beginning of the song
as the intro of the song, [Gb] and then one chord that happens later in the song.
Alright, so it's going to be quick.
So let's start [Eb] here just learning [D] the four main chords.
[Eb] Now [Gb] it's an E minor [Ebm] shape.
You can play it with these two fingers like he does, but what you're going to want to
do is you want to [Eb] mute out that G string by letting your, whatever [Db] finger you want to
use depending on what fingers you're using to hold those two notes on the E minor, [Bb]
you
want to [D] mute out that G.
So it's not a full E minor anymore, [Ebm] now it's just an E power chord.
Alright, and then we're going to go to a G [Gb] chord.
Now this is a G chord shape that has the open B in it.
Actually before [B] we actually do that we [Ab] go to the A, I'm sorry.
So it goes to the A before the G.
A major, [Gb] then the G.
And then we're going to [Bb] have a B major chord, and how [Db] he would play it is he [Dbm] bars [Bbm] his first
finger across [Gb] the fifth and sixth [Bb] strings of the [A] second fret, and then bar [Bb] your third
finger across the fourth fret on the D, G, and the B string.
So what you're going to do here is you're going to strum really from the fifth string
of four middle strings on the guitar, [F] and he starts adding [Bb] that low note in there as he strums.
And then he, [A] a little bend on that two, [Ebm] to the low E open.
So the chords themselves, just for the basic chord progression that happens during the
song, is just that E minor,
[Ab] to A, [Gb] G, [Bb] B,
[Eb] and a little bend.
Now [F] he doesn't do that every [Eb] time, but a lot of times he does.
[Ab] [Gb] [Bb]
[Gbm] Now for the strumming pattern, and for those of [B] you who get confused with strumming patterns,
it's a [Am] slow eighth note feel.
So just keep [Eb] your hand about that tempo, down, up, down, up.
And all you're going to do is you're going to miss the strings [Gb] when you don't want it
really being heard.
So [Eb] it's like, see how my, it just keeps going even if I'm [Ebm] not hitting the strings on all those.
That's how you kind of create a rhythmic variety, but you [A] still stay in rhythm.
So [Eb]
[Ab]
[Gb] [Bb] all you notice by right hand is just never stop.
[Eb]
Some are kind of hit [Ab] louder, just add dynamics, [Gb] but just use [Bb] your ear with it.
[Eb] So instead of [B] just counting numbers and stuff, [Gb] just feel that nice steady [Bb] motion in the right
hand, or [Bbm] left hand if you're strumming with your left, [A] and just really try to feel that
[Eb] on just one chord.
Don't worry about the changes.
And then put the [A] changes in, and you're good to go.
Now in the intro of the song, he adds [Db] a fill to the chord [Ebm] progression.
It sounds like this.
[Ab] [Gb]
[Bb] So you saw what I did there, [Eb] leaving the E,
[Gb] [Eb] zero [F] on the low E, [Gb] two, then [D] three.
Oh, let me, [Dbm] I think I forgot to [A] tell you guys, [Eb] this is tuned down a half [Db] step, this song.
So you're going to tune your guitar to E flat, A flat, [Bbm] D flat, G [B] flat, B flat, [Db] E flat.
And then you'll be able to follow along with [A] the recording in this lesson.
So sorry [Db] for delaying that little information.
But we have zero, two, three on the low E [Gb] string.
So we have [Eb] this.
[Ab]
And then you grab that A real quick.
So he plays [Gb] it with those [Ab] two fingers and grabs that [Gb] A.
So [D] during the intro, you'll
hear that verse when you're leaving, going [B] from the E minor, or just the E [Eb] power chord
to the A.
[Ab]
[Gb] [Bb]
[Eb] So it just ends up with the E minor start again.
[Ab]
[Gb] [Bb]
[Eb] Alright, [Gb] now, towards the end of the [B] song, everything just kind of stops.
And then the band just comes in real [A] quick and just hangs on an E suspended [Ebm] four chord.
It [Ab] goes back to [Bb] the same progression.
So that E sus four chord, [Ebm] now instead of muting that G string, lay your [B] little finger there
on the [Ebm] second fret.
So you have low E open, two, two, [B] two on that G, then [Eb] the open B and the open high E.
And then you're back to the progression.
[Ab] [Gb] [Bb]
[A] Alright, so it's a nice easy one [Bb] to get your rhythm [F] chops down if you have any trouble with strumming.
And you know, it's [Db] a cool little [B]
Nirvana cover.
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
I'll see you again soon for [Gbm] GuitarLessons365.com.
