[E] Hey guys, it's Carl Brown from GuitarLessons365.com.
Today I have a quick lesson for you.
Learn how to play About A Girl by Nirvana.
So this is the original kind of version from their debut album Bleach.
So we have two chord progressions and a solo here.
So we're in standard tuning.
This first progression is simply just going to be an [Em] E minor chord [G] to a G major chord.
Now make it a G major chord that's got the open B string.
So [Em] we have [G] [Em]
kind of an [G] eighth note feel.
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G] [Em]
[G] Back and forth between those two chords and you got [A#] the verse.
Alright, for the chorus I guess of the song, we're going to [C#] have this.
[E] [G#] [F#]
[A] [C#] [G#]
[F#] [E]
[G] [A] [C] [Em] Then [C#] back to the verse there.
So that starts here with the way he plays power chords here off the fifth string
where he does a bar with his ring finger.
So he has the fourth fret here on the A string.
And he's going to bar across the sixth fret on the B, G, and the D string.
Now for the most part he's hitting these three strings, just the 5, 4, and 3.
But every once in a while we'll hear that note and the second string get in there.
And that makes it a full C sharp major chord.
[G#] Then over to the power chord off the fourth fret of the low E string.
[E] And then [F#] down to the second.
[C#] We have this.
[G#] [F#]
Repeat [C#] that.
[E] [G#] [E] [F#]
Then we have the open low [E] E power chord.
Now as you're playing that you're going to slide into the seventh fret version of that basically.
So you slide that same chord we played to the fourth fret here.
Play it here at the seventh fret off the fifth string.
Once again, you'll get that note on the B string in there a lot.
[A] Then the A chord, A power chord.
And then that same [F] chord we did here at [C] the fourth and seventh here.
Now just at the third.
[E] We have this.
[A] [C] [Em]
And it takes us back to the verse.
So all [C#] those chords again.
[A] [G#]
[F#] [C#] [A]
[G#] [F#] [E]
[A] [C] Now the last [C#m] time they played the chorus in the song, they repeat [E] that section.
[A] [C] [D] [E]
[Am] [C]
And just build on that last chord.
So you hear that in the very last chorus of the song.
All right.
So let's take a look at this guitar solo.
Let me play through it [E] real quick for you.
[G] [A] [E] [G]
[E] [Em] [A] [B] [G]
[E] [A] [B] [G]
[E] [C] [B]
[G] [A] [C#] [G#] [F#]
[C#] [G#] [F#]
[E]
[A] [C] [Em] [E]
All right.
So we're going to start here with the same phrase played four times.
Open low E string.
[Em]
Then 5-7 on the A.
[E] Then 5-7 on the [G] D.
[A] [E] And when you play this, the 7 on the D string, you can pick it like three [A] times.
[E] [B] And then slide it up to [E] the ninth fret.
[D] [Em]
[A] [E] [B] Pick that a couple times there and [D] then pick and slide up to the [Bm] twelfth fret.
And then [A] play the 12 on the [G] G.
Back to the 12 on the D.
And [A] back to the [Em] 12 on the G.
[E] [D] [Em] [A]
[E] [G]
[E] And repeat that four times.
[Em] [A] [B] [G]
[E] [Em] [A] [B] [G]
[Em] [A] [B] [G]
Then we just [G#] kind of continue [Em] with the [C#] chords to the chorus.
[G#] [F#]
[C#] [G#] [F#]
[E] [A] [C]
[E] All right.
So that's about it for About a Girl.
