[Dbm] [Ab] Hey guys, it's Carl Brown with Guitar Lessons 365 .com.
Today we're going to learn how to play Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.
So I'm sure you guys, you know, you've heard this one before.
So it's going to be a pretty quick lesson, so just a couple of parts to learn.
So let's start here with the power chords at the first fret.
We're in standard [A] tuning on the low [F] E string.
And then you're going to move that power chord shape over one [Bb] string or down one string.
So you move everything down.
And make [E] sure you mute the low E string because you're going to be doing some pretty wild strumming.
So [G] mute the low E string by, with the tip of your [Bb] first finger.
[E] Let it go past the string that it's [F] holding down and just touch that so [Bb] it kind of mutes it.
[Ab] Then you do the same process at the fourth fret.
[Db]
So those are the four chords of [F] that main riff.
[Em] [Bb] [A] [Ab]
[A] [Db] So I'll play the rhythm really slow on the right [F] hand.
[E] And in between the chords we have some, you just mute the strings [F] and just do some dead
[B] strings [Bb] there and [Am]
[Ab] then do the same thing here at the fourth fret.
[G]
[Db] [G] [F]
[Em] [Bb] [E]
[Ab] [A] [Db]
And then they just let it ring [Em] open [F] more.
[Bb]
[Ab] [Db] [F]
[Bb] [A] [Ab]
[Db] All right, so that's pretty much the intro.
[F] Obviously it starts with a clean tone, but it's the exact same riff, just the muted version
of that riff.
[E] [Bb] [Ab]
[A] [Db] Which they do most of the time, but [F] they do open it up there [Bb]
[Am] [Ab] [Db] as well.
Now we have this [F] part.
This [C] is the verse.
So we're going to be starting here at the fifth fret on the G and then the sixth fret
on [Fm] the B string.
[C] Pick the G, [F] then the B, let them ring.
You're going to do that a few times.
Four to be exact.
And then [C] as the band starts building up the tension to go back into the chorus, you just
hit each one of those notes twice.
[F] And you don't pause at all, just,
[Em] and back to [F] the riff.
[Bb] [Ab]
[Dbm] [F] [E]
All right, now we have another riff in there that sounds like this.
[F] [Gb] [G] [F]
[E] [Bb] [E] [F] [Gb]
[F] [Bb] [Ab]
[F] All right, so that's at the first fret, power chord, and then up to the [Gb] second fret.
[E] [F] [Gb]
[Bb] Then do a bend here at the third fret on the G string.
[Ab] Kind of a slow bend.
[F] Then come back down to the first [E] fret power chord on the [F] low E string.
[Bb] Then six [Ab] and four.
[F]
[Bb] [Ab] [F]
[Gb] [F] [Bb]
[Ab] [F] [Gb]
[F] [Bb] [Ab]
All right, so then we're [F] back to that [C]
and back to [Cm] the same chords that we've already done.
All we have now is the solo to take a look at.
Let me play through it real quick and then I'll take you through it note for note.
[Ab]
[Db] [C] [Bb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Eb] [Ab] [Cm]
[Ab]
[Db] [C]
[Bb] [Ab] [Bb] [Ab]
[G]
[Ab] [G] [F] [Ab]
[G] [Ab]
[G] [Fm] [G] [Ab]
[G]
[F] [Ab] [G] [Ab] [G] [Ab]
[G] [F]
[C] All right, so we're going to start here on the G string, fifth fret.
Then [Eb] eight.
Then up to ten, [F] slide,
[Gm] [C] kind of slide back [Eb] down.
[F]
[Ab] Now [Fm] you're sliding down, [Ab]
grab the sixth fret on the D string.
[F] [Ab]
[Eb] Then the eighth fret on the G, pick that and then do a whole step bend and [F] release.
[Eb]
[Fm] [Eb]
[Db] Then you play six five on the G.
[C] Then again, [Db] [C]
[F] [Ab]
[F] [Db] [C] [Db]
[C] over to eight six [E] on [Bb] the D.
[Ab] [Db] Then pick that eight again and [Bb] a whole step bend and release.
[C] [Bb]
Then [Ab] six five on the D.
[G]
[Db] [C]
[Bb] [Ab] [Bb]
[Ab] [G] [Cm] Can you start over?
[Ab]
[Db]
Same notes.
[C] [Bb] [Ab]
[Bb] [Ab] [G]
Now these [E] last two notes there, we just repeated the same thing twice there.
You just continue the six five [G] and then after three times, the fourth time, you pull off
[Abm] six of five [G] and then pick [F] five and slide down to three.
[Abm] [G]
[G] [Ab]
[G] [F] [Ab] Do that [G] four times.
[Ab] [G] [F]
[Abm] [G] [Ab]
[G] [F] [Ab] [G]
[Ab] [G] [Ab] [G]
[F]
Then it feeds back and does [Em] all that stuff.
That's about it for Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Obviously, it's probably the biggest song of the 90s, but not very difficult to play.
All right, hope you have fun.
I'll see you again soon for guitarlessons365.com.
Bye bye.
