Some of you probably be able to relate to this.
I've often referred to songs a little bit
in some ways like children.
You know, it's like you raise this song up,
you sort of, you write it,
nor it writes you depending on how you look at it.
And you kind of don't know what kind of life
it's gonna lead, where it's gonna find itself,
what opportunities it's gonna have or not have.
And this song in particular,
Oh God Forgive Us was just that.
We wrote it [F#] about four or five years ago now
in a very different time in culture,
[N] very different time in American history
and the world stage was very different, frankly.
But as it sort of grew up
and we've faced with over the last year or so,
just so many different political components
or racial issues or religious international extremism,
this song has sort of taken flight
and become an anthem for us.
That's the song we close the night with.
And we felt very strongly that this was a song
that for the church and for Christians in America
to say, hey, let it start with us.
In a time, it seems like there's no shortage
of pointing fingers, that we'll be the ones saying,
hey, forgive us first God
and may we in turn [C] forgive our brothers.
And so we hope that this is a song that impacts you
and a song that you can use to really charge your church
to spur them on in the journey.
This is Oh God Forgive Us.
[F] [C] [F]
[Am] [F]
[Dm] [F] [C]
We'll pray the prayer with no [F] reply
[C]
Words flowed out from to [F] the night
[Am] Couldn't cut our [D] doubt with the [F] sharpest knife
Oh God [C] forgive us
Silence [D] isn't comfortable
We [C] won't drive through peace [Em] and instant [F]
hope
[Am] A shadow [F] faith that has left us broke
Oh God forgive [C] us
[F] Oh God [C] forgive us
[F] Slave to [Dm] our own certainty
[C] Help us with our own belief
[F] Oh God [C] forgive us
Young and old, black and [F] white
[C] Rich and poor, there's no [F] divide
[Am] Hear the mighty [F] and hear the powerless
[Dm] Singing oh [F]
God [C] forgive us
[F]
Oh God [C] forgive us
[Fm] Slave to [Dm] our own certainty
[C] Help us with our own belief
[Dm] Oh [F]
God [C] forgive us Forgive [D] us
[F]
Yes, we have [C] ignored you
[G] So [C] busy doing your work [F] that we forgot that this was [C] for [G] you
Arms wide [F] to our homeless saviour
[C] But arms [G] crossed to our homeless neighbour
[Dm] On [F] bended knee, unite [C] us all, set [G] us free
With our white [F] flag sailing in [C] the night
[G] Eyes pointed to the sky
[C] [F] Hands up and [C] open wide, [G] open wide
With [C] our white [F] flag sailing [C] in the night
[G] Eyes pointed to the [C] sky
Hands up and open wide, [G] open wide
With our white [F] flag sailing [C] in the night
[G] Eyes pointed to the sky
[F] Hands up [C] and open wide, open [G] wide
With our white [F] flag sailing [C] in the night
Eyes pointed to the sky
[F] Hands up [C] in open wide, [G] open wide
Oh, [F] [C]
[Dm] [F] oh God [C] forgive us
[Dm] Oh, [F] oh God [C] forgive us
[F] A slave to [Dm] our uncertainty
[C] And helpless with our own belief
[F] Oh, [C] oh [Dm] God [C] forgive us
