[Em] Hey Blues fans, this is Anthony from Texas Blues Alley.
It's time for Free Lesson Friday again.
This week we're taking a look at a lick from the song Me and My Guitar by one of my favorites,
Mr.
Freddie King.
This is off of the album with the blue cover, I think it's called Texas Cannonball, and
I think this lick happens at 3.08.
A couple things you need to know, I believe Freddie used standard tuning, so that's what
I'm using here.
The song is in the key of E, [E] so I'm almost positive he was in standard tuning.
[N] And this lick happens right as we're going into the 5-4-1-1 at the end of a 12-bar progression.
So, [A]
get my treble turned up there.
[Cm] [A] [Eb] Alright, so timing-wise, you want to aim for, [A] [D] you want to be hitting that first note on
the E string right as it hits at bar [Em] number 9 on the 5 chord.
So, just a little timing note there.
The way we get into this lick, you're going to slide along the G string up to the 9th
fret, [A]
and then you're going to start [Cm] [B]
alternating between the G and the E string, and to get
the right feel, you've got to kind of use [Db] your fingers there.
[Ab] [G]
[C] You can do it with a pick.
You
[Gbm] can do a pick and a finger.
[Bbm]
[A] [Cm] [Bm] [A] You know, if you're quick, you can use just a pick.
I prefer to use [G] my thumb and my index finger.
[F] [Bm]
[E] You're going to go 9-8-7, going back and forth between the G and E.
[Ab] [Bm] [E]
[A] And then you're going to drop to 6 on the G string, 5 on the E string for the final
one, [Eb] [A]
and then 2 hits on [N] the E string at the end.
[C]
[A] Okay, so that all [B] happens as the rhythm section is going to the [A] 5 chord.
[Dm] [A]
Now, one quick note there.
[Em] You don't just slide and then go right into that note.
You've got to slide and then [Cm] go [Bm] into [C] that.
[A] Otherwise, [C] your timing will be off.
Now, as the progression drops [B] [A] to 5 down to 4, we're going to [E] slide into box 3 here, [F] [G]
[A] slide
up to [Em] 6 on G, 5 on B,
[Bb] [A] then walk 7-6 [Gm]-5 on E, drop to [C] 3.
[Bb] [G] So we just walked into box 3 [E] along the G string, walked along the E string down into box number [C] 2.
[Bb] [G]
Then [E] [D]
drop 5 [C]-3 on the B string, [D] [A]
slide from 4 [G]-2 on the E string, [E] play it open, then down
to 2 on the D string, [G] [Ab] then roll from open to [E] 1 on the G string, up to the open E [D] string,
down to 3 on the [Gm] G [A] string, [Bm]
then slide 2-4 on [Gm] G, let the third fret of [B] the B string ring
out, [E] [Dm] [G] then
[A] do a reverse rake as you [B] slide back from 4 [A]-2,
[G] [E] [A] 4-2 on [G] G, [E] open, 2 on D.
[Em]
[E] [D] [G] [E]
And then to finish it, [G]
[E] [D] [Em]
[G] you're going to roll again from [E] open to 1, G, open [D] E, 3 on [Em] B, and
then open again.
[E] [Dm] [G]
[E] And that takes you smack right into the end of the 12-bar progression where you're ready
to start soloing again.
So we're basically filling the last four [G] bars of that [A] progression.
[C] [A]
[Em] [D] [Em]
[E] [D]
[Em] [E] [F] Hopefully you find that useful.
You can throw it into any song that has a more
[N] rockin' beat.
It might not fit quite as well over a swing beat, but if you find a song with a rockin'
beat, you can throw that in over the last four bars of the progression.
Hope that's useful to you.
Until next time, thanks for watching.
