[N] Hey this is John with LearningGuitarNow.com and this is podcast number 34.
And in podcast number 34 I'm going to go over a shuffle style lick in the style of Freddie King.
We're going to dissect the lick here that you can play in the key of E over a shuffle type blues.
So I'm going to go ahead and play it over the backing track for you now so you can see
what the lick sounds like and then I'll show you how to play it.
[E] [Em] [E]
[A] [E]
[C#] Ok now that you've seen [B] and heard what it sounds like over a backing track, a shuffle
in the key of E, it's 12 bar blues, 4-4 time signature and we're also swinging the 8th
notes on this shuffled blues.
So what you do is the first part of the lick is a pick up.
You count 1-2-3 and then you come in.
So you go 1 [G]-2-3.
[B]
So 1-2-3 and then you bar the bottom two strings, the B and the E strings with your first finger
[E] and then you bend [B] the 15th [N] fret of the B string up to the pitch of the key.
So you're bending the 15th fret of the B string up to the E note sound.
That's the root.
That's what key we're in.
Then we're going to apply some heavy vibrato in this lick.
And Freddie King does the vibrato really fast.
So you have to use your wrist and it's got to be in time with the shuffle.
So the up and down movement is in time with the rhythm.
1-2-3-4.
So that's what you want to work on when getting that vibrato down.
Now another Freddie King move that he always does is the over bend.
And after we bend that 15, [G]
you take 15 and you bend it to that sound.
It's almost [F#] on the, pretty much the 19th fret sound or 18.
Kind of in between there.
But you got to use your ears to get it and not really go for a certain sound.
His [E] sound is pretty much to that note.
[B]
So it's pretty much the 19th fret.
But you got to get your ears [Bm] to where you bend it to [N] the correct pitch.
It's just a really cool move and he does it a ton.
It's just bending 15.
Now bending it way up there to the 19th fret.
And then coming back hitting [E] 12.
And then bending and vibratoing the 15th fret again.
And the next part of the lick we're just running down the scale here.
Pentatonic.
12th fret on the high E.
15th fret of the [G] B.
12th fret of the B.
[A] 14th fret of the G.
[Gm] 12th fret of the G.
[Cm] And then 14th fret [E] of the D string.
[Gm] And you do a minor third, major third hammer on on the G [G#] string.
[C#] So that little [G] lick slowly.
[G#]
[F#] Okay, and then [B] after that, we're going to come back and do the same thing.
This is going to happen over the A chord.
[Em] You bar the bottom again.
Bend the 15th fret [N] of the high E string up to the 17th fret sound.
And then you got to apply the same style of vibrato again.
This is happening over the A chord.
And that bend up 15th fret on the high E string.
You're bending it up to the 17th fret.
Which played over A chord sounds great because that note you're bending to.
That is an A note.
So that's kind of why that makes [D] sense.
And then the next part we're going to do a pull off [Em] 15 to 12.
[G] 15 on the B string.
12 on [Em] the high E.
[Cm] And then we're coming back around to the E chord.
Right when the E chord hits, you're going to bend 15th fret up to the E sound.
You're bending up to an E note.
And once again the vibrato.
[Em] So vibrato is a key element of pulling off a lick like this.
And you just have to practice it every day to get that Freddie King vibrato
that's fast and in tune with the song.
So I'll go ahead and play the whole lick slow for you now.
This.
1, 2, 3.
[F#] [G] [C#]
[G] [Em] [Gm] [Em]
[B] [Cm] [E]
So that's pretty much how the lick works.
You just want to take it slowly.
And you know there's a tab that you can get as well for this lick.
And you just got to take the vibrato, practice it every day.
And practice doing it in time.
[N] With the song you're playing over, that's the key to getting vibrato to sound good.
And listen to more Freddie King.
He's got tons of cool albums and a bunch of cool licks that you can learn
and apply to your own blues playing.
So that's it for Podcast 34.
