Chords for Open E Tuning Slide Guitar Lesson: Duane Allman Style Lick

[E] And in this [B] week's podcast I'm going to show you [C] a Dwayne Allman style lick [Gb] played over
shuffle in the key of [Ab] D. _
This is a 4-4 time signature shuffle.
[Eb]
And once again this is a Dwayne Allman style [Em] lick.
And [Gb] I'm going to go ahead and play the lick over a backing [F] track for you to show you what
it sounds like [Eb] over the shuffle.
Then I'll dissect how to exactly play this lick.

_ [D] _ _ _ _ Okay now that you've heard what the lick sounds like over the [Dbm] backing track, and once again
this is a [D] Dwayne Allman [Em] style lick [E] played in the [Eb] key of D in open E [C] tuning for slide [Db] guitar. _
[N] _ [Eb] I'll go ahead and break down the lick [F] slowly. _
[Db] _ It starts off on the 10th [Gb] fret, open E [G] tuning, you know, key of D.
[D] _
_ _ _ Straight across the 10th fret is a lot [Eb] of where Dwayne Allman [A] played a ton of his licks.
[Db] And that's where you can get a lot of his [F] licks from.
It's just straight across that 10.
[Gb] That's a D [D] major chord.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
So the first [Gm] part of the lick we're just doing these slide [D] backs that he liked to do a lot.
_ _ _ [G] _
You know, he's always doing that type of a sound _ in open E tuning.
[Gb] So we're just sliding backwards on the 10th fret. _ _ _ _
_ It's 10, [F] _ pretty much _ 9 or 8, [Em] just around that area.
You've got [Db] to use your ears to get the Dwayne Allman sound.
It's not about playing [Eb] precise notes.
It's all about the soul and the attitude of getting Dwayne Allman's signature slide guitar sound.
So we take 10th fret, slide back on the E and the B strings.
[A] _ _ _ _
_ _ And you [Ab] slide into the 10th fret on the high E string for the [A] third note. _ _ _
_ _ Real [D] snaky, _ kind [E] of slippery slide guitar [B] sound. _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ [Db] And a lot of people think he does this.
_ [A] _ _ [F] Just straight eighth notes, and that's incorrect.
It's doing [Bb] this kind of dragged [C] dotted eighth [Dm] note sound.
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ [F]
But that's the first part of [G] it.
The next part of [Gb] it, we're doing the same thing, [Eb] except we're going all the way down
[Ab] the E, the B, the G [Db] sharp string [E] and end it on the 10th fret [Eb] of the E string for [B] the root note, D.
_ [E] Second part, [A] _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ so what we're doing there is sliding backwards on the 10th fret.
_ [A] _
_ _ _ Same thing on the B string.
_ _ And we're sliding [E] up into the 10th fret of the G sharp string, _ _ [D] _
_ ending on the root note
10th fret [C] of the E string in [Bm] open E tuning.
[D] _ _ _
[E] _ So you have [A] that. _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ Really common Dwayne Allman _ sound.
That's pretty much how you get that [B] style, is [Db] getting that type of lick down with the rhythm.
[A] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ So that's the first part.
The next part, we're doing another typical [E] Dwayne Allman style [Eb] lick.
The backwards slide to the 8th fret.
[C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ You've got to use a backwards slide to the flat [Am] 7th interval. _
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ On the E string.
_ _ Then 10th fret on the [D] B string in the E string. _ _ _
_ _ _ Then we're going to slide into the 10th fret again on the G [A] sharp. _ _ _ _
_ Hit the B string on the 10th fret. _
_ _ _ Slide to the 13th fret of the [F] B string.
_ _ _ _ _ [Em]
Flat 7th.
Now [E] we're going to do a backwards [F] slide to the 8th fret on the B string.
_ [G] _ _ _
Up into [Em] the 10th fret G sharp string.
[Bb] _ _ _ _ [F] To the [Db] root note 10.
_ [G] _ _ [D] D note. _
Slowly that part of the lick. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
One more time even slower.
_ _ [Am] _ _ _
[D] _ Keep [A] playing. _ _ _ _
_ [Am] _ _ _ _ 8.
Slide into 10.
[D] _ _ _ Then 10 again for the root note.
[G] _ _ _ D there on the 10th fret of the E [E] string.
Now when the G chord comes [Bb] around, we're doing the slide back.
[C] You'll hear [Eb] Dwayne Allman do a 10 [Em] to 8.
[G] _ _
Then you hit the 10th fret of the G sharp string.
[F] You do that twice. _ _ _ _ _ _
[Gb] _ _ _ Then slide 10 back again.
[A] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ [Eb]
Slide up into the G [Db] sharp string.
_ [D] _ _
To the 10th fret of the E string [C] for the root note D again.
_ [N] _ _ [F] Then the next part.
_ [A] _ _ [C] _ _ _ [Eb] Sliding backwards [G] to the 8th fret.
_ _ [F] _
10, 10 on the B and the E [D] string. _ _
_ _ _ _ Then slide into the 10th fret on the [F] G sharp and the B strings at the same [Dm] time.
_ So _ _ _ [Db] you're just hitting both strings at the same time.
D major chord.
_ _ _ _ Then just slide back gently.
So that's the whole lick of this Dwayne Allman style lick.
I'll play [Ebm] the whole thing slowly.
