[Am] Travis Scott, [Gbm] aka Jack Berman [B] Webster [D] II, is an American rapper and producer from Houston, Texas.
Musicianship ran in Travis' family, as his father was a soul musician, [Gbm] and his grandfather was a composer.
Travis is cited as major [G] musical influences as being Bon Iver, [D] Kid Cudi, M.I..A., Kanye, T.I.,. and [Bm] Tom York. When [Gbm] Travis was 15 or 16, [Bm] he released his first EP on the social networking website MySpace, with his longtime friend Chris Holloway. Travis attended university, but quickly dropped out and moved to New York in his sophomore year, in order to pursue music as a career. However, he only stayed there for four months before deciding [Gbm] to move to Los Angeles. After being cut off financially from his parents due to their frustration with Travis dropping out of school, [Bm] Travis ended [D] up sleeping on his friend's couch in LA. [Bm] Eventually, Travis got a stroke of good luck though, and T.I. stumbled upon his music and decided to set up a meeting, during which T.I. ended up rapping over one of Travis' beats. [G] Anyway, Travis has released albums, and he's had albums hit the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. I don't want to drag this out too [Em] long, so let's just get into the cook-up. First, I pulled up the Rich Ballad preset in Keyscape, and I laid down a chord progression in E harmonic minor. [Eb] [Am] [B]
Next, I opened up this preset in Nexus, [Em] and I just copy and pasted the chords to layer them. [Eb] [Am]
[B]
I turned the volume of Nexus way down. Here's what the chords sound like layered. [Em] [Eb] [Am]
[B] [Em]
Next, I pulled up this guitar preset from my Omnisphere bank, and once again I just pasted the chords. But this time I dragged the notes out to be a bit longer. [Eb] Then [Am] [B] I [Eb] used Alt-Y to reverse the chords and exported the pattern to a WAV file. I loaded the WAV file into Edison, used Alt-Left to reverse the audio. Then I dragged the audio clip into Slicer. I selected Slice [Gm] Every Beat, turned up the attack so there's volume ducking at each slice. I applied an EQ to cut the lows and highs. I added an imager to widen the stereo image. And lastly, I applied some [Eb] reverb. Here's what the guitar sounds like now. [Em] [B] I [Am] [B]
opened up this Mellotron preset, and I laid down a couple of notes for ambience. [Am] [B]
I opened up this Electro-X preset, and I made this melody. [Em] [A] [Eb] [A]
[Am] [B]
[Em] [Am] [Eb] [A]
[Am] [B]
I pulled up these bells in Omnisphere, and I made this counter melody. [A]
[G]
[Ab]
[Gb] [N] I added a clap. I made this hat pattern. I laid down an open hat. I added a rim. I added a snare. I made this kick pattern. I made this 808 pattern. I opened up this sub bass preset from my Omnisphere bank, and I laid down this bass melody. [E] [Eb] [C]

[Gbm] Alright, now it's time to write some lyrics. I'm not really all that worried about lyrical content here. For the most part, Travis' lyrics tend to mirror that of the average rap artist. The only notable difference separating Travis from his contemporaries, in my opinion, are his unique melodic rap flow, his eccentric vocal inflections, his trademark ad-libs, and his vocal effects. My vocal mixing here will be the same as always. If you want to know how I mix my vocals, check out my vocal mixing tutorial. I'll link it down below. I'll be uploading the beat [E] we made today to my second YouTube [Gbm] channel, as well as my BeatStars page. And just a disclaimer, I'm not attempting to do an outright impression of Travis Scott. The song I made is only meant to serve as a rough approximation of his style. With all of that out of the way, let's see what we've come up with. [Em] [Eb] [Am]
