Hi there, my name is Camillo.
Welcome to another guitar lesson on jazz blues comping
_ With kind of a rhythmic funk feel _ _ _ _
I got [B] this progression from an incredible modern-day blues guitarist called Kirk [N] Fletcher
_ _ _ There's a video of him playing this progression on YouTube
_ _ But there's no _ explanation as to what the the actual shapes are or kind of how the right hand
funk rhythm works
_ _ So I thought I'd make a video to break all that down _ _ _ _ _
And I think the best way to do that is to zoom in on the guitar neck and just slowly take you through it
And then I'll try to go into a bit about how the the right hand works _
So _ _ _ _ here's the slowed down version of this progression
_ Which actually feels a little bit weird to play at this tempo
_ So I'll do my best to stay in [G] time
_ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [Eb] _
_ [Gb] _ _ [Bbm] _ _ [F] _ _ _
[Fm] _ _ [Gbm] _ [Gm] _ [Db] _ _ [Eb] _ _
[Bbm] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ [Dm] _ _ [Fm] _
[Gm] _ _ _ [Db] _ _ [Eb] _ [Bbm] _ _
_ _ _ [Eb] _ [Db] _ _ [Bm] _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Fm] _ [Gbm] _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ _ [Dbm] _ [Dm] _ _ _
_ [Dbm] _ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ [Gbm] _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_ Okay, so I just wanted to briefly talk a bit about the kind of strumming pattern that you'll need to familiarize yourself with
in order to play this style of kind of funky blues guitar _ _ and
_ _ _ Yeah, it's basically just a short kind of _ staccato
_ _ Sort of half strum where you just drum a few of the strings like this
_ _ _ [N] immediately followed by a full strum _ _ and _
then _ an up strum after that _ _ _ _ and then repeat it _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And
There's not really one strumming pattern that runs all the way all the way through this song or anything like that
I mean you could have to kind of make it up yourself _ _ _
_ _ But _ _ _ _
If you get that technique down it will you know make learning this progression and playing it with the right feel a lot easier
_ _ so
_ _ Playing it playing that strumming pattern with the chords _ and you have to kind of release pressure off the chord too in fact
at the appropriate time to give it that real staccato feel _ so it should sound something like this [Gm] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _
and
_ there's a _ _ part right at the beginning of this progression actually that
_ _ That if you were just to kind of isolate it and practice it over and over it's going to give you the right
_ _ Feel for the technique that you need for this this style of playing _ _ _ so it's just a little B flat section it goes
_ [Eb] _ [Bbm] _ _ _ [Eb] _
_ [Bbm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _
[Bbm] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ [Bb] _ _ _
[N] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ [Eb] _ [Bb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
Doesn't _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ need to be perfect really but
_ _ _ Yeah, if you just like I say practice this one bit over and over and you'll get this technique [Bbm] down
_ [Eb] _ [Bb] _
_ _ [Eb] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _
_ _ [Eb] _ [Bb] _ _ _ [B] You was happening there [Bbm] is it's just _ hammering on [Bb] the top [Db] part of a B flat
[Bb] _ _ B flat 7 chord
_ hammering on the major third _ to _ _ [Eb] this _
_ bar _ from the D _ string downwards _ _ _ _
_ _ Barring with the pinky _ and using the ring finger to kind of support it _
_ _ _ [Db] _ _ [Bb] _ _
Back to [Db] hammering
_ [Bb] _ _ _
To B flat major chords so [Db] two hammers
[Bb] _ top _ part of a
_ _ _ And _ [Db] _ _
_ [Cm] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _
[N] _ then with it with the correct pattern and releasing it the right times on [Db] that thing
[Eb] _ [Bbm] _ _
_ _ [Eb] _ _ [Fm] _ _ _ _
_ [Db] _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Dm] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [N] First lay that down for you, so you can see what's [Db] happening
_ _ [Eb] _
[Bb] Yeah, _ [Db] _ _ [Eb] _ [Db] _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ [Db] _ _ [Eb] _ [Bb] _ _
_ _ [Eb] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [G]
so it's not about doing it perfectly really.
It's just getting the right kind of feel _ _ _ _ _ _
_ So that's all there is to it really _ _ if you have any questions about this lesson, then please let me know _ and _
