Hello, guitar players of YouTube.
My name is Camilo,
and welcome to my first YouTube guitar lesson.
I'd like to start things relatively simple today
by showing you just a few jazz blues comping chords
in the key of G.
The chords I've written out I think can really add
a sort of different level of interest
to a standard 1-4-5 blues progression
and just more of a jazz kind of feel.
So rather than just, you know, your basic
and
[C] [Bb]
[Db] sounding like status quo for 12 bars,
I hope that after you learn the chords in this lesson
it might inspire you to create some more
kind of jazzy, jazz blues sounding licks and solo ideas
or even just provide a more interesting backdrop
to improvise over.
So, that being said, I think I'll zoom in on the guitar neck now
and explain all the chords in this progression.
Okay, I think what I'll do now is play through
the whole progression nice and slowly
so you can follow the on-screen chords
and perhaps play along after you've learned them all.
[G]
I should mention that to get a kind of mellow, jazz sounding,
kind of more muted tone,
it's a good idea to use the flesh of the thumb
[E]
[Em] and just
[Gbm] [Gm] do kind of little relaxed brush strokes.
If you're going to try and do [Em] that with the pick,
there's just a bit too much [Bb] attack there
and with the soloist playing over the top of these chords,
you'd end up creating too many kind of jarring frequencies
and the whole sound would just be a bit muddy.
So, yeah, have a go at just relaxed little [Em] brush strokes
like that with the thumb.
[G] Okay, so I'll play through this whole progression nice and slow.
[Dm] [Ebm] [Em]
[D] [Gm]
[Gbm] [E]
[Ebm] [Em] [G] [Fm]

So as I'm sure you can see there,
with relaxed jazz blues progressions like this one,
it's not about having perfect right hand technique
and being very articulate.
It's more just getting that kind of relaxed, rhythmic, comping feel.
