I think this song took me about a year and a half to finish, mostly because I was [Eb] scared about how [E] dark and kind of gothic it was.
[Ab] [Eb] And when I did finally sort of succumb to the song and got done with it, I was absolutely positively sure that nobody would ever touch it with a 10-foot pole.
But I liked it and I decided that I would [Abm] go into the studio and make a [Gb] demo of it, just to satisfy myself, because I thought [Eb] it was a good song.
But nobody was going to cut it, nobody was going to record it.
So the very first artist that ever heard it recorded it, within a couple of weeks I think.
And not only [F] that, it was a single [Abm] and it was just everything that I knew that it wouldn't be.
And I learned a really important lesson then.
That's not my job to worry about that stuff, and it was a good thing.
And I have to remind myself from time to time, but all that other stuff just doesn't matter.
It's [Gb] just getting the song out that's what [Ab] matters.
[Ebm] [Eb]
[F] Well she seemed alright by [Db] dawn's early light
Though she looked a little worried and weak
[Ab] She [Eb] tried to pretend he wasn't drinking again
[Eb] But daddy left the proof on her cheek
I was only eight [Bbm] years old that [F] summer
And I always seemed to be in the [Bb] way
So [Fm] I took myself down to the fair in town
[Eb] On [F] Independence Day
[Ab] [Eb] [Bb]
[Ab] Well word gets [Db] around in a small, small town
[Ab] They said he was a [Db] dangerous man
[Abm] Mama was proud and she stood her ground
But [Eb] she knew she was on the losing end
[Ab]
Some folks whispered, [Db] some just talked
But everybody looked the other way
And [Fm] when time ran out there was [Ab] no one left
[Eb]
On Independence Day
Let freedom ring, let the white [Fm] dove sing
Let the [Db] hope [Abm] that today is a [Eb] day of
Let the weak [Fm] be strong,
[Db] roll the [Ab]
dice
On Independence [Eb] [Ab] Day
[Db]
[Ab] Well she lit up the sky that [Db] 4th of July
[Ab] By the time that the firemen come
They just put out the flames, took down some [Eb] names
And sent me to the county home
[Ab] Now I ain't saying [Db] it's right or it's wrong
[Ab] But maybe it's the only [Db] way
[Fm] To talk about your revolution
[Ab] [Eb] It's [Ab] Independence Day
Let [Eb] freedom ring, let the white [Fm] dove sing
[Db] Let the hope [Ab] that today is a [Eb] day of
Let the weak [Fm] be strong, [Db] roll the [Ab] dice
