Thank you, Harlan.
That was wonderful.
You know, Harlan, [Eb] you've written, what, like 900 number one songs, I guess, over the past 35 years.
And when you write that many songs, at some point you have to forget one or two that you've written.
And I know you have a little story about one, when that actually happened to you.
Yeah, this, well, actually, we're dealing with about 3,000 songs, also a little senility.
And in the early 60s, I was driving into Nashville, Music Row, and I was listening to the radio,
and this young country singer, Hank Jr.,
somebody, was singing, and he hadn't had any hits yet.
[Ab] I thought, well, Hank's getting better all the time.
And I [Gm] said, boy, I sure do like that song.
And I thought, if I'd have written that song, I'd say this next.
And he said it.
And I said, if [Ab] I heard that line, I'd say this.
Anyhow, I kept on saying the lines before he sang [Gm] them.
And finally we got to this bridge, and I thought, boy, I'd be ridiculous here, and I'd say this.
He said that.
And finally we got to the bottom of the song.
[G] I said, hell, that's my song.
And anyhow, I had my publisher check up [C] on it, [Ab] and what had happened, Hank's a good kid, and he's not [N] a thief.
But some guy at a bar in Alabama had sold him this poem for $50.
And so I signed a piece of paper and everything, and the guy had taken the song out of the Country Song Roundup,
wrote it out in longhand, and sold it to my little buddy Hank.
I don't think he does that anymore.
[G] Yeah, I wouldn't do it after the first time.
But this next song, this is a tune of yours that [Eb] you wrote that's on my Little Love Affairs album.
And I'm proud.
Yeah.
It's a little tune called [A] Nevermind.
[G] [D] Nevermind
[E] [A] You say you're heading [D] out to [E] California
[D] You heard the grapes [E] are falling [A] from the vine
And I was hoping you might [D] have the urge [E] to write
But [D] I don't [E] believe you if [A] it's a nevermind
Well, I was talking to [D] a man down [E] at Janesco
[D] And he thought they might [E] be hiring any [A] time
Well, I'm so tired of [D] going any way [E] the wind
And [D] I thought that you [E] and me are [A] nevermind [E] Nevermind, nevermind
I'm [D] just talking [A] through the wine
[D] And you know that drinking always makes [E] me sad
But [Gbm] before this night [E] is through
[A] I'd better say [D] I love you
Or [E] I'm gonna always wish
[A]
I [D] [A] [D]
[E] [A]
first saw you picking [D] oranges in [E]
Orlando
And [D] all day you kept [E] your ladder [A] close to mine
And we'd frozen [D] Georgia burned up in [E]
Chicago
Son of a baby
[D] And I always [E] thought that we were [A]
nevermind
Did you know today [D] your baby [E] called me daddy
[D] Sometimes I wish [E] that she was [A] yours
Well, I could call my brother [D] milk and [E] cinnamon
And [D]
ask him to [E] call alone But [A] never
[E]
Nevermind, nevermind
[D] I'm just talking [A] through the wine
[D] And you know that drinking always makes [E] me sad
[D] But before this [E] night is through
[A]
I'd better say [D] I love you
[E] Or I'm gonna always wish [Em] [A] For heaven
Plus [E] I'm gonna always wish
[A] That I'm in heaven
