I have a new album coming out called Other Voices, Other Rooms.
And all the writers who are on the record are here tonight.
And this next writer wrote a song about a woman named Caroline.
And my middle name is Caroline.
And I first heard this song when I was a young teenager growing up in Texas.
And without this man, who is by far the finest songwriter that the state of Texas ever gave birth to,
there would be no Nancy Griffith.
Townes Van Zandt.
[A]
Well, the name she gave [D] was [A]
Caroline,
[D] the daughter [A] of a miner.
[D] And her ways were free, [C#m] and it [F#m] seemed to me,
[E] sunshine [D] walked beside her.
[Bm]
[D] [A] Well, she'd come from Spencer, [D] [A] across the hill,
[D] said her pa [A] had sent her.
As [D] the cold was low, [C#m] and soon [F#m] the snow
[E] would turn the [D] skies to winter.
[A]
Well, she said she'd come [D] to [A] look for work.
[D] She was not [A] seeking favors
[D] for a dime a day, [C#m] and a [F#m] place to stay.
[E] She turned those [D] hands to labor.
[A] But the times were hard, Lord, [D] and the [A] jobs were few.
[D] All through [A] Tecumseh Valley.
[D] Well, she asked around, [C#m] and a [F#m] job she found,
[E] a tending bar for [D] Gypsy Sally.
[A]
Well, she saved enough [D] to [A] get back home
[D] when spring [A] replaced the winter.
[D] But her dreams were denied.
[C#m] Her pa [F#m] had died.
[E] A lot of word come [D] down from Spencer.
[A]
She took the poor [D] in, [A] out on the street,
[D] lost [A] inside her.
[D] And it was many a man [C#m] who [F#m] turned again,
[E] lay himself [G#] [D] beside her.
[A]
The name she gave [D] was [A] Caroline,

[D] [C#m] [F#m]
[E] [D]
[A] Well, they found her down [D] beneath the [A] stairs
[D] that led to [A] Gypsy Sally's.
[D] In her hand when she died [C#m] was a [F#m] noted cry,
[E] fare thee well, my dear Caroline.
[D] Tecumseh Valley.
