[D#] Hey everyone, welcome back to HD [F] Piano.
[A#] This is Phil, [D#] and in today's video I'm going to show
you how to [F] play Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton, if you remember that one.
[B]
And in this video we're
going to be looking at specifically the intro, and that sounds like this.
[Em] Alright, so let's start
with the right hand.
That's the part that's sort of most recognizable here.
We're going to get into
a B octave position [B] with our thumb on the B above middle C, pinky on the B above that.
So we're
pretty high and treble-y right now in this intro.
Our thumb and pinky are going to sort of toggle
between these.
Okay, so our next note after this, we're going to go B, B, B, B like that.
Our next
note is going to drop down to this A sharp, and again we're toggling with the thumb B.
And then
our next note after that is going to be F sharp underneath.
Okay, so you put all that together
and you've gotlet'sle do that again. And one and two and three and four. One more time. And one and two and three and four. Good. And then again, between the thumb and our note we're playing on top, we're going to toggle. So we're going to keep on the F sharp for a little bit, then we finish [C#] it with D sharp, [B] C sharp, B. And this B that we've just played is the same one that starts the pattern of and one [A#] and two [B] [A#]
and one. See that? That B [Em] leads us back to the same [B] pattern again here for the second part of the intro. So let's put all this together here. By the way, we're in the key of B here outlining the B major scale. Sort of a B pentatonic thing here, but all in the key of B, which means all five sharps are used. [F#] [C#m] For now we're skipping over the G sharp, but we're gonna stay in the key of B the whole tune. So [B] thumb on B, pinky on B. Let's try that whole first phrase. Here we go. One and two and three and four. And one and two and three and four. And one and two [C#] and three and four. And. Good. The next phrase starts the same way, and it's actually almost exactly the same except for [C#] when we get to the D sharp, C sharp part. So that second part goes, [B] and one and two and three and four. And one and two. Here we go. We're gonna go D sharp, [C#] E, D sharp, C sharp. Okay? So that'll go just [B]
like that. So the second phrase all together goes, and one and two and three and four. And one and two and [D#] three and [E] four. And then we [B] jump right back up to B. We're gonna do the same thing again [C#] as the first one. The same thing as the first phrase, which means D sharp, C sharp, B instead of the D sharp, E, D sharp. Very slight change, but it's worth noting. So our third phrase here is the same as the first, and then our fourth gets a little bit different, and that's gonna go. [F#]
So [C#] D sharp, C sharp, B, D sharp, C sharp, B, F sharp, C sharp. [B]
So let's put all four phrases together here. We're gonna start at the beginning. We got one and two and three and four. And [A#] one and two and three [B] and four. Two, three and four. And one and [F#] two and three and [B] four. And one and two, [G#] three, E. There we go. One and two and three [B] and four. Same as the first one here. [C#] And four and one and two and [Bm] three and four. And [F#] one and two, three, four. [C#m] A little bit of a syncopation there. We're gonna wait until beat two to play the C sharp. So one more time, [C#] that fourth phrase goes one and two and three [F#] and four. And one and two, three, four. Just like [G#] that. Alright, let's get [E] the left hand in the mix. It's nice and easy. We're gonna hover right around here with our second finger on E, [F#] thumb on F sharp, [D#] middle finger on [B] D sharp. [D#m]
And our pattern [E] here is gonna be E, [F#] F [D#] sharp, [E] D sharp, E. And that repeats, so we'll play another [D#m] E. [E] E, [D#] F sharp, D sharp, E. Just like [D#m] that. And that kind of repeats throughout the [E] whole song, almost. It's varied a bit, but that's gonna be what it's based on. Alright, so let's add them both together here. Here's how they match up. And one [B] and two and three, [D#m] four. So every time there's a new top [B] melodic note in the right hand, the left hand changes. [Em] One [G#] and two and [B] three and four. [E] Two and three. See that? We get to the D sharp. That's when our last note is. I know that sounds like a bit of a clash, but when you put it all together, [C#] you can't really tell as [E] much because it's in passing. Alright, so again, the first phrase goes one and two and three and four. And one [B] and two and three and four. And one, two and [A] three and [Em] four. And [G#] one, two and three [B] and four. Second phrase, the left hand's the same. [E] Three and four and one [B] and two and three and four. This is all the same as the first phrase, [E] right? [C#] Now, same thing in the left here. [B] [D#m] [C#]
So let's match up that fourth phrase. We've got one and two and three [D#m] and four and [C#m] one and two. Alright, so guys, keep [E] practicing along with those each four phrases until you can get them up to speed, and then when you do, it'll sound like this. One, two, three, four. [B] [E]
[E]

[C#] [B] [C#m]

By the way, we're in the key of B here outlining the B major scale. Sort of a B pentatonic thing here, but all in the key of B, which means all five sharps are used. [F#] [C#m] For now we're skipping over the G sharp, but we're gonna stay in the key of B the whole tune. So [B] thumb on B, pinky on B. Let's try that whole first phrase. Here we go. One and two and three and four. And one and two and three and four. And one and two [C#] and three and four. And. Good.
Second phrase, the left hand's the same. [E] Three and four and one [B] and two and three and four. This is all the same as the first phrase, [E] right? [C#] Now, same thing in the left here. then we finish [C#] it with D sharp, [B] C sharp, B. _ And this B that we've just played is the same one that starts the pattern of and one [A#] and two _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [A#]

_ So let's put all four phrases together here. We're gonna start at the beginning. We got one and two and three and four. And [A#] one and two and three [B] and four. _ _ Two, three and four. And one and [F#] two and three and [B] four. And one and two, [G#] three, E. There we go. One and two and three [B] and four. Alright, let's get [E] the left hand in the mix. It's nice and easy. We're gonna hover right around here with our second finger on E, [F#] _ _ thumb on F sharp, [D#] _ _ middle finger on [B] D sharp. _ _ _ _ [D#m] _ _ _ _ _ _
And our pattern [E] here is gonna be E, [F#] F [D#] sharp, [E] D sharp, E. And that repeats, so we'll play another [D#m] E. _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ E, _ [D#] F sharp, D sharp, E. Just like [D#m] that.
