How to Play Dimming of the Day - by Richard Thompson chords
Start Jamming...
Hi, I just thought I'd do a quick lesson on how to play a simple version of Dimming of the Day by Richard Thompson
[F] This version [Em] is similar to the live version that he plays
In that it's capoed up to the fourth fret
I believe in the original and also in the covers like people
such as Alison Krauss [D#] and Bonnie Raitt have done and it's either played open [C] or capoed on the first fret and
Mr.
Thompson also plays it with a
Drop D tuning so that's just the D
[D] tuning of the sixth string, [E] but you can just play it with
the standard tuning chord shapes
[Em] It's a fairly straightforward chord pattern as I say in the drop D
The chord shapes are slightly different, but it gives some nice
resounding [B] bass
notes so you get that nice D on the when you're playing the D chords
so the
sequence of [Em] chords for the verse is
[B] beginning on a G and
then traveling [E] via a B diminished [B] chord to the [F#] D and [E] then C
and then the descending bass line
[C#] [B] [F#]
To the D and then [B] back to the G [F] and then B [D#] diminished and the [F#] D and
[E] then C again and
then [F#] D [B] and G
And that's it for the verse
[Gm] so for the
chorus
It goes from a D
[C#m] [F#]
To an A ninth and [C#] [G#]
[G#m] [G#]
[D#] then back to the [F#] D and then [C#] A and
[E]
that's all the [Em] chords
[N] So I'm gonna play the verse through to the chorus and first just the guitar alone and then
[B]
[F#]
[E]
[B] [F#]
[B]
[F#]
[E] [B]
[F#] [B] [B]
[F#]
[C#]
[G#] [F#]
[C#]
[E]
This [B] old house is falling down [F#] around my
I'm [E] drowning [G#m] in the fountain [B] of my
[F#] Tears
[B] When all my will is gone you [F#] hold me sway
I [E] need you at the [B] beginning of the day
[F#]
[B] [F#] You pull me like the moon pulls [C#] on the tide
You [F#] know just where I keep my [C#] bedside
[F#]
I [E] need
[D]
[A#] [E] you [B] at the demand [F#] [B] of the day
[C#] [B]
[F#] [B] [E]
