How to play "El Zorro" by La Rumba - Tutorial chords
Start Jamming...
Hey everyone, today I'm finally going to do a tutorial on a song El Zorro which I wrote
with Michael Raja for the band La Rumba maybe 8 years ago now and I've had many requests
to do this.
So here we go.
We'll get straight into it.
[B] The song is based [C] around these 4 [Am] chords.
[F] [E]
[G] [F] [E]
And an out of tune E.
[G]
So what I'm playing, it's normally the same [E] sort of pattern going around and around for the [A] beginning.
7th fret.
[B]
[G] [A]
[F] [Em]
[E]
So [B] I'm playing 7, [C] 9 and 10.
[Em] 5, 7, 9.
3, 5, 7.
[E] And then ending on the 2nd fret on the E.
[N] The things that do change are the phrasing of it.
So I'm not going to go into a lot of detail.
I actually have written out the tablature which is available for a little price.
Gotta pay my rent.
[C] So basically the phrasing, [G] I do it a few different ways because I never really play the same
thing [D] the same way.
I find it gets a bit boring [A] for me.
But I [B] sometimes would play the open A string at the [A] same time [F#]
[G] [G#] and I also might slide instead
of [A] hammering on and pulling off.
[E] [G] [F#]
[F] [G]
[E] [N] So you'll have to listen.
There's the CD version and there's the live versions which are all kind of mixed up and whatever.
So here we go.
If I play 2 [A] times through.
[Am] [B] [G]
[A] [F#] [G] [F]
[G] [F] [E]
[A] [E]
[Em] [A] [F]
[G] [E]
So [F] sometimes I change from this pattern [B]
to [A] the same [G] as the first one.
[E]
[Em] Little hammer on [E] pull off thing.
[F#m]
So oh sorry here we [G] go.
[A] That's covering over those 4 [Am] chords.
[Em]
[E] Then [G#m] it leads into [C#] the next part over the [E] same chords.
[Am]
[G] [A]
[F#]
[E]
[Am] [Gm] So I'm going up the A [A] minor.
[Am] [G]
[F#] [A]
[E]
[A] So I'm doing this stretch up here [C] and [A]
then moving [C#] position.
[E]
So that's [D#] the 2nd section.
The rest of it's all improvised.
Oh I'm a bit sweaty, a bit hot today.
[E] [G#] So here we go.
If [A#] I'm coming into it I'll go [A] from here.
[B] [G]
[F#] [A] [F]
[G] [E]
[Am] [A] [Am]
[Em] [G] [E]
[A] [F]
[E]
[Am] [G]
[F#]
[F] [E]
[C] So the 2nd time around it's a little bit [G#] different.
Where am I going [E] from?
[G] And then [E] to the F.
[F] [E]
[Fm] So once again this is something I play [B] differently every time.
So it's pretty much the [A] same thing.
But [A#] I may have [A] slid up like in the beginning.
[B] [A]
[G]
[F] [E]
The one thing I do [A#] is hammering on.
It's a flamenco kind of [D] thing.
But I found, I don't think I [G] ever did it before I played flamenco.
[B]
[D] Playing the open D, hammering [C] on this string [A] and then pulling away.
Or you [D] could play it.
[A]
[Am] [Em] [G]
[F#] [F]
[E] So it's all [G#] around the same scale idea.
[G] Aeolian.
[G#] Occasionally this is [N] on the E major.
So that's a quick run through.
I'm hoping it's helped.
If you do want the tab, like I said I did make it available to purchase.
And you can also buy this song along with a few of the other instrumentals that we [G] did
in La Rumba from our first 2 CDs.
So I hope that's helped a little bit.
Or a lot.
And I'm glad you're still enjoying the tune.
Thanks for the messages.
It's probably the most popular song I've ever written.
And yeah, enjoy!
[Am] [G] [F]
[E] [Am] [Bm]
[C] [E]
