Hello guys, this is AmosdollMusic, and in today's lesson,
I'm going to teach you how to play this song called
Hurt Feelings by Mac Miller, okay?
So the instrumental section is super awesome.
It's a repeating [Cm] loop that goes like this.
Give you a preview right now.
This is what you can learn.
[D] [Bb]
[Cm] [D] [Gm]
Yeah, and then you can—
Afterwards, you can just make it more [Bbm] awesome by adding more improvisations.
[Cm] You can be [D] like
[Bb] [Cm]
[D] [G] [Gm] [Cm]
[C] Anyways, let's go ahead and learn it.
So based off the [B] melody and chords first,
because from the foundations of melody and [C] chords,
that's how everything else is formed.
So here we go.
Let's learn it, okay?
We don't have to break it up into parts,
because it's pretty simple.
Goes like this, okay?
Right hand starts in D here, middle C,
go up an octave C, [G] D here.
So three Ds.
Two, three.
Down to G twice.
Up to B flat.
Up to F, G.
Down to C [Dm] sharp, D.
And that's it for the right hand for this motive, this section, okay?
So one more time.
So it goes like this.
The D, D, [Gm] D.
Down to G, [G] G, B flat.
Up to F, G, C sharp, D.
And that's it for the right hand.
Pretty simple stuff.
Once you get the right hand there,
left hand, we have three chords here, okay?
Three chords are [Cm] C minor 7.
This is a four note chord, which is C, E flat, G, B flat.
The second [Eb] chord is D augmented [D] fifth, which is D, F sharp, A sharp, okay?
It's a nice, kind of like clashy sound, but it's nice.
It's resolved with the next chord, the third chord, is G minor 9.
This is a five [Gm] note chord, okay?
So in order to play it with like the easier way to stretch that,
normal people kind of play like this.
It's too big of a [Dm] chord that not everyone can like stretch up to.
So just play [Gm] G, [Bb] A, B flat, D, F like that, okay?
Yeah, that's G minor 9, because you just put that A down once and up to right next to G, okay?
So one more time, the three chords are [Cm] C minor 7, C, E flat, G, B flat,
D [D] augmented fifth, D, F sharp, A sharp, and also G minor 9, [Gm] which is G, A, B flat, D, F.
All right, so with these three chords in mind, practice it well.
Then the two hands together goes like this, D and C minor 7 together,
[Cm] [Gm] third D and D [D] augmented together, and then G minor [Gm] 9 by itself, right comes in.
[Dm] And that's it, [Cm] you just repeat it.
[D] [Gm] Very nice chords.
[Cm]
[D] [Bb] Yeah, and that's it.
After you get this melody and chords very good, and also the rhythm,
then you can start thinking about other improvisational patterns,
decorations you can add to it to make it more awesome.
You can do more octave bass notes, and then followed by some rhythmic patterns
and arpeggios on the left hand, and right hand can harmonize it based on the [Cm] chords as well.
So you'll be like, [D]
[G] [Gm] [Cm] [D]
[G] [Gm] [Cm] [D]
[G] [Gm] [Cm] [D]
[G] [Gm]
yeah, just play around with it, it's pretty nice, okay?
Even just improvisation on the three chords is pretty nice already.
[Cm] It's like, [D] [Gm]
[C] [Cm] [D] [Gm]
[Cm] [D] [Gm] [C]
[Gm] [D] [Gm]
yeah, have fun with it, it's pretty nice, nice chord,
and also [N] they're good instruments, okay?
But anyway, so yeah, enjoy it for yourself.
