Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys.
[N] Why not, Mama?
All right, let's do this, man.
Doing a bunch of country lessons.
Waylon Jennings, Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.
Remember hearing this one as a kid?
Had a request for a bunch of country songs, man.
Primarily Zach Siepman, but I've had other requests for some more acoustic stuff and country stuff.
So I'm doing it.
I'm delivering for you.
So as you're finding, man, a lot with this old school country is you have a lot going
on with the basic chords in the open position with alternating bass notes.
So this one's a little more interesting because it's starting with D major, so 2E, 3B, 2G.
And what's happening is you're [D] hitting string 4 by itself and then go down, up, down on
strings 4 through 1.
[N] So it's just a variation.
You know, a lot of times [D] it's just a bass note down, up.
This time there's a triplet in there, which is down, up, down.
Then you'll go to string [A] 5 and then go down, up, down on strings 4 through [D] 1.
If you hit the [F#] fifth string in there, it's fine.
It's part of the [D] chord.
So you're going to do that twice.
[E] Then we go to G major.
It's 3E, 2A, 3E.
This time, another interesting thing in this song is the bass notes are string [Em] skipping.
So you'll start with the E string for your bass, which is really a G bass.
[G] You'll hit that and then go down, up, down.
Then skip to the [D] open D and then go down, up, down on strings [G] 4 through 1.
And then repeat that.
And then we [C] go to A major.
It's 2D, 2G, 2B, or [B] not 2B.
[A] You can hit the A bass and then down, up, down, and then [E] a low E bass and then down,
up, down on strings [A] 5 through 1.
And repeat it again.
So three [C] times and then back [C#] to
[D] Let me see.
Make sure I got that right.
[G]
[A]
[E] And then the A
So it's [A] three and a half times.
A bass, down, up, down, [N] which is interesting.
It's kind of tricky.
You don't notice it unless you're figuring the song out.
Then back to the D chord.
[D] Hit the D bass, open A.
[D#] Okay, so we have from the
Let's play it up to there.
[D]
[G]
[A]
[G#]
Woo, I hope I got that right.
Three and a half [D] times and then back to the D.
And then you start it over.
[E] D7 in there, guys.
You actually want to add that at the beginning.
Let me re-explain that part of it.
[G] So on [D] the intro, you're doing the
Second time you go to hit that D bass, down, up, down, [A] A bass, switch to D7 chord.
Sorry about that.
[C] 2G, 1B, and 2E.
And then go down, [Am] up, down.
Let's call it [E] D7.
And then we hit the [G] G chord, okay?
So that G chord is two times two, [A] then A major,
[G] three and a half times.
And then we go to D [D] major.
[N] Okay?
And then that progression is going to repeat.
This is a chorus of the song, not the verse.
The verse plays a lot of the same type of stuff, though.
This whole song pretty much kind of follows that [D] format.
[G] [D] Hit that D7.
So [A] one and a half, then the D7.
[G]
[A]
[D]
[N] So anyways, takes me back to my childhood in that one.
I remember hearing that when I was a little dude.
I'm going to keep some country ones coming, so stick around.
It's just going to be
