How to Play "Maria Maria" by Santana on Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
Hey there, what's happening?
I'm Nikki and I'm gonna show you how to play Santana's Maria Maria
and this is actually a request that came in from Kareem, so this goes out to you and
[Bb]
I'm gonna do all open chords for this one.
It starts off with an intro.
[Am] That's in a minor and
[Em] You can you know, you can just strum the a minor chord and
[Bb] While somebody else plays the solo that Carlos Santana [Am] does
[Bb] which is
For those of you who are lead guitar players.
He's playing a lot around just a regular a [D] minor scale and
It's up here around 12th to 15th frets
[Am] [Bb] so
okay, so the intro and
[E] you can do a bass that goes and
[Gb] All I do is I'm shifting [E] between the [A] e a e a
[Em] The open strings [Am] some hit the chord
You
[E] Can even like put your hand down if you know how to do palm muting you can go
[Bb] To kind of make it more muffled.
So I got my right hand right against the bridge the [E] end of the strings
so and this a minor [B] part [Bb] is going to be not only in the intro, but in all the interludes where
Carlos Santana plays lead guitar
It's also in all the parts [Gm] where Carlos and Wyclef are rapping
So and then you see there you can do that to do the part now
After the intro you go to the chorus and it starts with a D minor [Dm] chord
Maria Maria
You do
Two bars of that, you know four strums [Ab] per chord then you go to e
[E] She reminds me of the West [Eb] Side and then a minor [Cm] seven
story
For those of you don't know a minor seven.
[E] It's like an a minor chord, but you just leave the G string [C] open
and then
[Ab] And then a minor seven
[Bb] So it's like an a minor chord, but you put your pinky on the third fret of the B string
Now growing [Em] up in Spanish
And then [E] e7 like an E chord [Dm] but let the D string be open
[Am]
There's your a minor [A] and then
[B] A7 that's like a setup chord to do the chorus again
So for you who haven't done a seven it's like an a chord be let the G string be open
Maria [Dm] Maria
Back to D minor.
Whoa
No, no, [E] no and then e7 instead of E the second time
No, no, no, but he's [C] still a a minor and another minor
No, no, no, [Bm] no, no
E minor seven
[E] Then e7
Played by Carlos [Am] Santana and you [E] end on the a minor this time
[D] And then he does a [E] solo and you go
[A]
You do that part?
[Bb] Okay.
Now we're in the verse the verses
They're gonna be pretty much [Am] a minor
[G] And then G no no no no no no and then F could [F] either do a full
Barred F like [Bb] this or if you don't know how to do those
[F] Do this F chord or if [Bb] you don't know how to do that [Bb] one if that that barring is too hard just
put your index and middle finger on the top two strings and
then
Your middle ring finger goes on the second fret of the G [F] string.
So that's the easiest way to play F
[N] So, let me see.
So it's [Am] up to move and stuff.
You [G] shouldn't
Download it on down and [F] then
The F or we just left off and [G] then G the poor is getting [Ab] and then
[E]
On [Eb] that part you're gonna do an E chord with a G sharp in the bass
think of it as if you did a D a [B] regular D chord be gonna use your pinky and
[Bb] Ring finger middle finger to play this chord and then move it up
[E] The fourth fret [Eb] that way you have an E chord
[Bb] Then you take your index finger and put it on the bottom E strings fourth fret and there's your G [E] sharp in the bass
This is kind of like a nice setup.
So the verse [Gm] again
[Am]
[G] [F]
[G] [E]
Then the second verse is gonna be a minor seven
[C] No, no, no, no, no, no, [G] no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and then go to F
[F] Do-do-do-do-do-do-do and [E] then E seven and
Then the E with G sharp in the bass and then after that there comes the rap with Wyclef and Carlos
[A]
[Ab] Like I said the a minor chord [Bb] then after that then you need to do the chorus [E] and it's pretty much
[Bb] Like
the very [E] first [Dm] chorus
Except that we go from D minor
You're gonna skip the E.
Don't do the E chord.
Just go Maria Maria
She reminds me of [B] the West [C] Side Story
you go [Bb] straight to the a minor 7 so you skip that E chord and
[B] yeah, just play it through and
[Bb] Then you have
The third verse it's gonna be a minor [Am] 7 now
[C]
And [G] go to G
And then F
[F] And [E] then E7
[Am] A minor
[G] And then G
And [F] then F
[E] And then E and
[Ab]
It's basically a you kind of go back and forth [E] between
The verses and the choruses and the solos [Bb] the song ends with a solo
so you just hang out on the [Am] a minor chord and it's the
You [Gm] just kind of play that and when you want [Bb] to finish the song [Ab] the record fades out
But you could [Am] just kind of finish it with a minor strum
[Gb] So there it [Bb] is Maria Maria
So if you enjoyed this feel free to [Bb] request more songs [Ab] just you know shoot a comment [Bb] and
I'll check the songs out and we'll you know, try to try to teach them to you in the next coming weeks
