_ _ _ Hi and welcome to Funky Friday.
Today we'll be working on the bass and we'll be learning a tune called Slide from Slave,
1977.
This is a very cool funk groove courtesy of Mark Adams. _
The guitar is tuned E, [A] A, [D] D, [G] G.
_ And we're going to start by sliding like this.
_ [E] _ And then we're going to go to an open E.
[N] Now what you do is place your finger on the third
fret and strike the string, lightly pressing, and go_ _
And then come off of it like that.
Then you're going to go to E.
[E] _ _
You're going to strike E twice, _ _ _ _ then go to [G] the third fret,
strike G _ twice, _ _ and then [A] go to A, fifth fret, _ _ back to G, [G] third fret, and [E] then open.
_ And that was all on the low E string.
So we're going_
_ _ [G] _
_ [G] _ [E] _ _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _
[G] _ Now you're going to strike that G [E] note with staccato, like this, _ _ [G] _ _ [E] _ _ [G] _
_ [E] _ _ to full effect. _
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ Now that line is used throughout the song.
And we're going to do, later, a variation on that.
And we're going to go like this.
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ [G] _ [E] _ _ _ _ [G]
Now there's two [A#] ways you can [E] do that.
You can [A] [G] go_
[F#] _
[F] _ [E] Which involves going to the fifth [A] fret, which is A, _ [G] _ third fret, _ _ [F#] second fret, [F] first fret,
[E] open.
_ _ Or, you can go to open A, [D#m] which I like [A] to do, _ [F#] _ [F] _ [Em] like that.
Now the open A has a little bit more punch, [A] so I like [G] that one.
[F#] _ [E] _ _ [G] _
_ [E] _ _ [A] _ [F#] _ [E] Like that.
[A] But you can do either one.
Fifth fret, or your open A.
And go down.
Okay, and [G] that goes [E] like this. _
_ [G] _ _ [E] _ _ [A] _ [G] _ [E] _
_ Or, _ _ _ [Em] _ _
_ _ _ [G] _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ okay, now we'd like to try that little lick that goes something like this. _ _ _ _ _ _
What we're doing there is we go to open E, _ _ and then go to the fifth fret on the A string,
_ and hammer from the fifth to the seventh, and then back to the low E.
_ _ And then you're going to go up to the [N] seventh fret on the G string, and hammer from seven [E] to nine.
_ And then go to low E.
_ And then back on the A string, and then open.
So this is what you have. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ So every time you strike on the neck, you're going to strike that open E.
So it's like this.
Open E, _ fret five on the A string, _ open E, _ fret [D] seven on the G string, [E] _ low E, _ back to
fret five on the A string. _ _
_ It goes like that. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ All right, it's time to go to the bridge now.
And the bridge goes like this.
_ [A] _ [E] _ [G] _
_ [A] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [A] _ [G] _
_ _ [A] _ [E] So it's going to [Am] go something like this.
So you go to the A, which is at the fifth fret.
_ Then you go to the A string, [E] seventh fret.
_ _ _ And then you go to [G] G, fifth fret on the D string.
So [A] this is what you do.
_ _ _ [E] _ [G] _ _ _
[A] _ _ [E] So we went up to the seventh fret on the A string, _ fifth [A] fret on the [G] G string, and then
back and forth.
[E] _ [G] _ _ And then up to a high [E] A on the [A] D string at the seventh fret, like that.
So here it goes. _
_ [E] _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _ That's the first one.
And after that, you're going to go.
_ _ [G] _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _
[A] _ So what you did is you [E] vamped from that E to that [G] G, _ [E] _ _ [G] _ like that.
And then went [A] up to the high A.
[E] _ [G] _ _
[A] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [A] _ _
[G] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ [G#] _ _ All right, so let me show you how to get out of that bridge.
What we're going to have to do [A] is [G] this. _ _
[A] _ [Em] _ _ _ [A] _ [G] _ _ [A] _
_ [Em] _ _ [Am] _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _
_ [Em] _ _ [A] _ _ [G] _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ So how did we get up here?
What we had to do was go.
_ [G] _ [A] [E] And that is E, _ [G] G, A.
[A] _
And then we're going [B] to slide, just like they say in the song,
up to the [E] 13th fret.
You're going to slide up to the 13th fret on the G string [G#] and [E] _ land on that 13th fret.
And then do [A] this with your finger.
You take your finger and just hammer there.
[G] So you got to do this.
[A] _ _ [E] And an open E. _
_ And that gets us back into the [G] _
[Em] _ _ _ [D] _ [F] _ [E] _ _ [G] _
_ [E] _ _ _ groove.
All righty then.
Thanks for stopping in once again to Funky Friday. _
And have a great day. _ _ _ _ _
