[N] Hi, today we're going to be working on the Monkees 1968 hit, [G] Valerie.
[Bb] It's a
really cool song and it has an intro [N] that is sort of flamenco styled and
jazzy styled.
It's so fast it goes by and you don't even know what happened but
when you slow it down you realize that there's not a lot to it.
It's just
basically the minor scale in this shape [Fm] right here and it [N] would be just
consisting of these notes basically.
[Bb]
[Ebm] [Bb] [G]
[E] And when you change chords it would also
[Fm] change so from the F minor down [Eb] to the E flat you have different notes.
And when
it goes to the [Db] D flat [Bb] and
[Eb] [Db]
then finally down [C] to the C.
So [Fm] it's basically
consisting [Em] of those notes.
You have [Ab] to realize [N] it sounds hard when you play it
really fast but it's because you're not picking every note.
Maybe it's because
you think you have to [Ab] pick
[Eb] every note but that's the trick is it's a lot of
hammer-ons [Ebm]
and pull [Gm]-offs.
[D] [E]
You're distributing the load [N] between your
fretting hand and your picking hand.
I could take my hand off [D] like this.
[Dbm] [C]
[G] [Ab] This
hand is picking up a lot of the work.
[Bb] So if you try doing it like [Ab] you [G] notice that
this hand is working hard too but it helps to share the load and it seems
like it's a lot harder than it is but really it's learning it slow
[Bb] [C] and [Bb] [Eb]
[Cm] [Eb]
[C] [Gm] [D] [F]
that's
basically all there is to it because [C] it builds the memory in your fingers to
where once you try to play it really fast it sort of flows [B] out because your
fingers know just where to go.
It's pretty neat once you put it into
practice the idea of practicing something slow and knowing that it's
hammer [Gm]-ons and pull-offs
[Fm] and it's just a simple minor scale in this shape
[Bb] [Cm]
then
it'll suddenly turn into and [Bb] [Ab]
[Bb] [Cm]
[Gm] [G] [Ebm] [Fm]
[C] [Bb] [G]
[Fm] [N] that's all there is to it.
Thanks for [Bb] watching.
