[C#m] [G#m] [C#m]
Hey, what's up?
This is Jake One and this is a making of Chance the Rapper's [E] Acid Rain from his Acid Rap mixtape.
[C#m] [G#m] [C#m]
Basically this song came together like [E] a lot of random things do.
A friend [A] of mine, Svee, who's a record [G#m] industry person, [C#m]
he's a good friend of mine, he told
me I should check this dude out, Chance the Rapper.
So [E] I saw his video, [C#] what was it, The Juice?
I think it was called Juice.
[G#m] [C#m] I thought it was tight.
I was like, yeah, [G#] you know.
Whenever somebody knew like that, I think it's dope, I just followed [E] them on Twitter.
So I followed him and [C#m] maybe an hour later or something, he DMed me like, yo, we gotta do something.
So I literally sent him like five beats and that was one of [E] the beats.
I think I sent him the beat on a Tuesday and the song came out on a Thursday.
[G#] So it [C#m] happened really fast.
You know, the thing that's cool about doing something with him early on [E] is that I have
not really done [G#] that in general.
I'm kind of like catching people [C#m] on their second or third albums.
I got on 50's second, third project, Drake's third project, [E]
Rick Ross's, I don't even know
what number project that was, [A] and so forth.
So it [C#m] was kind of cool to get somebody on the way up with their career.
And the song was [E] really dope and it got a really good response.
So with this one, [A#] I started with Defender [F#m] Rhodes, which to me was [B] kind of the foundation
of the whole beat.
So I chopped these up.
[G#m] [E]
[C#m]
[G#m]
So we got that.
[A] Then [A#] there's the bass [E] line.
[C#m]
[G#m]
[B] And then, you know, [F] I found this [A#] vocal part that just totally [E] worked.
[C#m]
[F#]
[E] [A#m] So here's another little harmony part I put in [E] here.
[C#m]
[E]
[N]
And these are the drums.
Snare Jordan, once again, off the [A] drum kit, straight off the drum kit.
[G#m]
[C#m] [G#m] [C#m]
[F#] [E]
[G#] [C#m]
[E] [C#]
[C#m] [G#m] [A]
Here's the [D#] wet block once again.
So yeah, I put the wet block in there.
I've used the wet block on a bunch of beats.
[E] [G#m]
[C#m]
[E] So, [C#] I [N] pulled up the session for this one because for some reason the original file
won't pull up on my ASR because it's an old ass machine.
My [B] disc somehow won't let me load.
The guitar sound that my little homie Swish played, he actually played it for something
totally [Dm] different and I just put it up in this beat [N] for whatever reason.
I do that a lot.
And it's crazy, it just worked perfect.
[E]
[G#] [A#m] [E]
[B] I guess I had totally forgot about this, but on the original version of the beat I had
these toms in there and for whatever reason I just scrapped them.
You don't hear that in the Chance the Rapper [A#] version, so this is a remix I guess.
Shit, yeah, maybe I'll put those on Snare Jordan too if the demand is high [E] enough.
[A] [E]
[B]
It's definitely not a loop.
I rarely loop anything, so especially with drums I'm just taking [C#m] different toms at different
[A#] velocities and pitches and I like to put them in ASR and just [A] make my own loop out of it.
[C#m]
So that's kind of what I did with that.
And I do that a lot, it's just kind of on my low.
