Jeannie, you were pretty close to Billy and Betty Walker, weren't you?
I was, as I think everybody in this room was.
They were probably two of the most outgoing, warm people that I've ever met in any business,
and certainly in ours.
Billy was special to me because when I first moved to Nashville and signed with Monument Records,
Billy was recording for Monument at the time, and I was so excited.
I remember calling home, and I was as excited about telling my mother that I was on the same label
with Billy Walker as I was about having a record deal, you know, because we were all such fans of Billy's.
He was so nice to me and really helped me through those early days at Monument.
You've got a Billy Walker song you can do, don't you?
I do.
The night Billy was supposed to be on the Tuesday night opery,
and of course the accident happened the weekend before and we lost him,
I went in to do the opery that night, and they had put together a tribute to him.
Eddie Stubbs had done the research that Eddie can do and had all this wonderful thing made up to say,
and they had compiled all these wonderful photographs to put up on the screen,
but they forgot to tell me they wanted me to sing a Billy Walker song.
So it was just the grace of God, Willie Nelson, that I used to sing this song as well,
so I was able to sing it, but it was a tough time to get through.
It was probably a good thing that I was so nervous trying to remember it
and didn't have time to think what I was doing.
But since then I'm so delighted that I get emails and phone calls all the time asking me to do this song,
and did recently because he would have been 79 years old last week.
Can you do it for us?
I'll try to.
I'll try to.
