[C]
There used to be a beer joint [Am] where the working men would drink and [G] yell and horse around
most every [C] night.
There was always [Am] lots of [C] beer and pickled [Am] pork and country gals, [G] and always lots of
arguments [C] and fights.
The owner was a burly man, and he [Am] chased most fights outside [G] to the little parking lot behind [C] the bar.
One [G] night I was driving by and I saw a [Am] crowd back there, [G] and I drove around and got out
of my [C] car.
They were whooping, and they were hollering, and they were packed in [Am] so tight, [G] they wouldn't
break that circle [C] for no one.
So I climbed up on the top of my car to give myself [Am] a view [G] so I could see the center of their [C] fight.
Well, the two guys that were fighting were so different [Am] in size that [G] I found myself laughing
with [C] the crowd.
One was just as big and mean as any man I've ever [G] seen, and the other was the kind that's
[C] small but proud.
The little man hauled off and hit that big man with all he had, [G] hit him harder than anybody
thought [C] he might.
And the big guy lost his balance [Am] and fell back, bump his head.
And he got up [G] slow, and oh, the crowd got [C] quiet.
He just [G] lumbered over and hit that little [Em] man upside his head [C] so hard I swear [G] to God
I heard [C] a crack.
But the little fella didn't fall, [G] he just [Am] weaved and groaned a bit.
He [G] stood there, a human [C] punching sack.
That little fella's arms hung [Am] helpless at his side [G] as the big man pounded awful on his [C] head.
And his legs began to buckle and he sunk down to his [Am]
knees, and the [G] whole crowd knowed that
soon [C] he would be dead.
As that big guy just pounded away, I [D] saw the strangest thing, [G] the hand of that little man
begin to [C] move.
And it slipped into his pocket where it found an [Am] equalizer that [G] before this night was just
a whittling [C] tool.
With a soulful rolling motion, that little fella [Am] made a sweep and [G] caught the big guy
clean [C] across the gut.
The big man started screaming, grabbed himself and tried [Am] to run, [G] but fell and died before
his [C] eyes would shut.
Now the little man was unconscious [Am] and near death for many days.
[G] And when he came to, he would not [C] believe.
[G] While on his knees [C] unconscious, his hands had killed [Am] a man, [G] and to this day he [Em] thinks
he's been deceived.
