And a word of warning to any guitar player out there,
never write a song sitting down,
because you might not be able to play it standing up.
That's the lesson of this next song called Crushing Day,
which actually was one of those songs
that we started quite early in the project.
Maybe it was the first of four songs that I kind of felt
was almost like a demo recording before Relativity in New York
really gave me the green light to do this record
that I said was supposed to be sort of an upbeat guitar record,
not a very dark sort of thrash metal kind of thing,
and that was kind of like what they were expecting.
And I said, no, this record's going to have a smile on it,
it's going to have little parts of Chuck Berry and everybody else in it.
But I thought, well, I'll give them one song
that's got a worked-out solo
that maybe tips a hat to a little bit of metal here and there.
And I did in fact write the thing with the guitar up like this,
sitting in a really low chair with my knee up and everything.
And then nine months later, we're out on the road,
and I realized I can't play this thing
with a guitar way down here looking cool.
And I wasn't going to sit out on stage, I thought.
So we kind of shelved the song, but [Am] it turned into a fan favorite.
And we like playing it now,
and I think we all kind of figured out what to do with it.
It's not one of those songs like Ice Nine
where you can do it a million different ways
and it survives somehow and it's exciting.
It's a song that kind of wants you to just do it the right way.
So we're going to try to do Crushing Day right now.
