And it was filmed?
That's right.
Yeah, that was a video some friends of mine made for free at the film school in [Bb] Leeds.
And [Eb] yeah, I stuck it on YouTube, as I tend to do with these videos, to try and get a bit of promotion, you know.
And it started to go viral with people sharing it on their social networks.
And some of those people were quite famous.
Probably the most famous one was Stephen Fry.
So when he tweeted it, [E] that made it go even more crazy.
[Eb] And yeah, then [Gb] just things have gone a bit
What happened when he tweeted it?
[Eb] Because it was that one word, wow, and then a link to that video.
What happened next?
Well, it took [E] a while for the [Db] media to catch on to it.
And then it was in a few [N] newspapers.
So for me, it's just been very strange to kind of watch it all unfold.
And I don't feel like it's really, really me that it's happening to, to be honest.
So what level was your
you're a full-time musician now, you were then.
You could describe me as kind of an underground cult musician.
And I'm very independent as well.
I don't have a record deal or any intention of ever [Eb] signing a record deal.
You don't want to sign one?
No, no.
Why?
I have a lot of kind of ethical and political issues with the commercial music industry.
And as an independent musician, they often market their artists as being independent when they're really not.
And [N] I don't know.
I also don't like to compromise myself artistically, whether that means my music's better or worse.
I don't know.
But you want to be able to control your music and how you put it out there.
That's exactly right, yeah.
Well, Stephen Fry has given his verdict.
And you've brought the guitar along.
This is Wilma.
This is Wilma.
Wilma looks like it's had a bit of a life.
She has had a bit of a life.
Now she does have feelings, so please be careful what you say.
Has she had a bit of a life?
She has.
She's been all over the world with me.
And, yeah, she's, she's
but she's still beautiful to me.
She's still beautiful to me.
Would you play something for us now?
Yeah, I'll play you a little bit so you get an idea.
Here we go.
[Gm] So this song's called Passionflower.
[A] [G] [Eb] [Gm]
[F] [Gm] [F]
[Eb] Born in [G] your tiny [Gm] prison cell
[F] [Gm] [Eb] A million times smaller than [G] you [F] are
[G]
[F] [Eb] One [Gm] single drop and you're as in awe
[F] [Bb] [Eb]
Afraid of the [Gm] dark
[Eb]
[Gm] [Eb] [Gm]
[Eb] [Gm] Well, [Ab] [Gm] [Ebm] [Eb]
that's lovely, John.
And very, if I may say so, unconventional.
I now understand, can you see the guitar?
I now understand why there are these sort of worn areas on the guitar
because you're, you're using it like a single drum.
Yeah, the whole [N] thing is
people don't realise there's a whole drum kit inside the guitar.
That's fantastic.
When did you learn to do that?
How did you learn to do that?
Well, my first guitar teacher when I was four years old, he was a classical player
but he also played flamenco guitar and in that style it's perfectly normal to play,
to play drums on the guitar, basically.
And so it's always just been a part of the way that I've played guitar.
It's actually becoming more popular, that style now.
It's a bit of a fad, so I'm a bit of a beneficiary of that.
So whether the fad lasts, people [Eb] still like me on that, I don't know.
Well, you've got extraordinary talent, you really have.
Thank you so much for coming in.
Thanks for having me in.
And good luck.
Good luck with the rest of your career.
That's John Gomme.
He's going to be touring the UK, by the way, in September.
Is it
do you just have Wilma?
Or is it
are there other guitarists?
I'm a guitar monogamist.
And a monogamist in every other way.
OK.
Thank
