Hello everyone, today we're going to learn how to do a little bit of _ soloing in a surf rock style.
So what's really important about this are the 1-4-5 _ patterns _ as well as a kind of surf
rock _ idiomatic _ rhythmic pattern with the pick. _ _
_ So we're going to be starting off by using the A minor scale, then we're going to learn
how to borrow from the 4, the D minor, use the D minor scale.
And then we're also going to use A minor _ _ harmonic minor so that we can get this really cool
kind of surfy Egyptian type of sound _ _ when they play the 5 chord.
_ _ So _ _ before you start into this, _ _ it _ helps to be familiar with what your scales are.
Of course, I can help you with that.
_ You can just read Music Theory in One Lesson, my best-selling book.
It'll go through all of it for you.
That way you can sit down and watch these types of lessons and just absorb the information
like a sponge and become a much better guitar player.
_ _ _ So first, let's talk about the 1-4-5 in A minor.
That's the key we're going to be playing in.
So our 1 is the A, _ _ and then our [Dm] 4 _ is D minor, and [E] after that our 5, _ E major. _ _ _ _ _ _
When we're soloing over the A minor, of course, we're going to be using that A minor scale.
And _ _ what we're really going to be trying to do is trying to outline the notes of [Am] the chord.
So we have A, C, E.
So open A, [C] _ C's third fret [E] of the A, _ E's second fret of the [Gb] D.
_ _ _ _ _ We're going to be dancing between those notes using the scale.
We're going to be using a really kind of surf rocky sounding _ _ _ _ [A] pattern. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [E] _ But the way we're going to do this is we're going to go _ _ _
_ _ [G] passing note, _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ passing note, passing
[Bb] note, da, da, da, da, _ [A] da, da.
_ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ [Cm] _ _ _
_ _ _ All that is is A, B, C, C, D, E, F.
You're getting _ those notes of the scale and you're
actually _ _ _ kind of dancing around them.
That's not the only way that you can play this.
So a couple [A] variations, _ _ [B] _
_ [Cm] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ [A] _ _ _ that's one way to do it.
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [Bbm] _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ [Cm] _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ That's another way [A] to do it.
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ That's another way to do it.
You play around with this stuff, [F]
but as long as you're sticking to those notes, you're
probably going to be pretty golden.
You want your phrasing to sound kind of like _ individual _
[E] ideas.
_ You can also do it up here.
_ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _
Of course, that's the same [N] thing as down here because we have that pattern repeating.
We have our root, _ two frets up is the second note, third fret up is our _ third.
_ Next open string is the fourth, _ two frets up from there is the fifth, and we've got
the sixth up here.
So we're doing the same thing, two frets up for the _ _ _ two, third fret up, next string, two
frets up, third fret.
_ _ _ _ If we were to go further, which we're not yet, there would also [Ab] be, _ _ but _ anyhow, _ when
you're done _ soloing through the first chord, then you're going to move on to the fourth chord.
In this case, the D minor.
We're going to outline the D minor.
So D, _ F is the third fret of the D, and A, second fret of the G.
And actually, you're going to be using basically the same exact idea.
We're also going to be implementing this B flat, which is outside of key, but it is in
the D [D] minor key.
So _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ [G] _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
from the one, _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
so that B flat actually is creating a good amount of distance because
we're borrowing it, and borrowing is a really cool thing to know how to do when you're soloing. _ _ _
_ _ And as with the other one, there are a couple different ways that you can do this. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ There's another way of doing it. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ There's another way of [Bb] doing it.
We could, _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
there's tons of ways to do this, but [N] again, the important _ _ thing is da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da,
and it's sounding like the phrase _ _ kind of is a complete idea.
You don't want to necessarily end on that B flat because _ it might not sound complete. _
_ Next what we're going to do is we're going to borrow from the five, which is our E.
We're
going to borrow specifically what's called the leading tone from there.
And if you want to find the leading tone of [Eb] any note, all you do is you go a half step
backwards [Gb] or one _ _ _ _ _ fret backwards.
So _ _ if _ _ we are going from [D] this D, _ _ so da-da [Bb]-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da, _ _ [Gb] _ _
[Ebm] _ _ [Em] _ _ [E] _ _ you can kind of [Eb] get this, [E] _ _ _ _
and that'll bring
you into the five.
[Abm] And when we're playing the five, we're going to want to use what's called the A harmonic
minor, so you're going to actually sharp the seventh, so our G _ [D] is going to become sharp.
So _ _ [Bb]
that _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ G [E] sharp is, you guessed it, the leading tone to the A. _
_ _ So when you're soloing over the five, it's actually really nice to use these half steps,
so da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
And then maybe da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
Or _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ [E] _ even you could put a little chromatic thing.
_ _ [Bb] _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ It's up to you.
You're going to have to play with these notes, but knowing that you're building blocks are
A minor, _ _ D minor, A harmonic minor, as well as borrowing just for a moment when you're
leading into the E chord, _ the D sharp from the key of E major, gives you a lot of room
to have a lot of fun with this stuff.
[Bb] Now, _ _ _ of [N] course, _ being a really good soloer on your guitar is kind of contingent on how
well do you know this fretboard.
_ _ _ You could go to _ _ _ _ musicandguitarlessons.com and sign up for the free membership where
you can start to play the interactive puzzles to learn the notes here.
You could read Music Theory in One Lesson, which of course is not guitar specific, but
it's basically a roadmap of all of Music Theory, I think just over 50 pages.
A lot of information in there, _ how to build chords, how to build scales, all of that stuff.
_ _ _ _ Or you could also write in the comments below some questions and I'll do my very best to
get back to you.
_ _ _ Of course, guitar [Bb] takes time, so if this hasn't settled in in this just, you know, six minute
lesson that I put up, _ try it and keep trying it _ _ and make sure that you have a good practice
routine in place.
I cannot stress that enough.
The better your routine, the better your progress.
And if you get good at progressing, then you progress faster. _
_ So any questions, please send them my way.
Otherwise, happy practice. _
