So in this video, I'm going to show the scale hijaz on the guitar.
This is a really common Middle Eastern scale
If you know what the harmonic minor scale is, this is basically the 5 mode on the harmonic minor
So I'm going to show this for E
That means this would be like taking a harmonic minor and starting it from E.
[E] So it goes
[F] [Ab]
G-sharp
[A] A
[B]
B right and then on the way up you play the C-sharp [Db] so
[D] And [E]
[F] [A] [B]
[A] [E]
[B] [Em]
then on the way down the C-sharp becomes C natural.
So [A] [Fm]
[A] [Ab] [E]
E major is the chord that goes with this
[F] So [B]
[A]
[E]
now [F]
[E] let me show the chords that go with this so basically the home chord the root chord is E major
[F] [E] And [F] [E]
[F] [E]
then to harmonize that G-sharp on the melody you would use E major again
[F] F major
[E]
[Am]
[E] [F]
[E] And then when you're going up to get the [A] C-sharp the A chord would become major
[Dm] D [A] minor, A [Dm] major, D [A] minor, [Dm] [Am]
A minor again, [E] E [F] major, F major, [E] and then E major
So basically you have E [F] major, F major, [Am]
A [A] minor, A major, [Dm]
and D minor
[E] Those are your basic chords.
Now as an embellishment [F] you can do some of the Spanish stuff
So
[E] [F] I
[E]
[A] [F]
[E]
explained that stuff in another video, but basically all the chords that [F] are half E [A] major and half F [B] major
So you're free to [Em] use those.
If you [G] use this chord, it can work
[A]
[Em] It basically kind of becomes a [E] different scale
and sounds more Spanish than [G] Middle Eastern because this
[E] this is a very Spanish chord progression [F] and
The notes don't really go with the notes from Hijaz, [Ab] right?
You kind [G] of you don't have a G-sharp in this, you have a G [E] natural
[F] [Am]
[E]
And so one more embellishment is it's common in the Hijaz scale to go
Right in the high part of the scale to change it and [F] just go up a whole step from the root note
So rather than playing
[E] You can play
[A]
[E] [A]
[Am] [A]
[E] [F]
[E] Right.
[Em] So one extra chord that you could use there would be [E] D major
[D]
[E] [Dm]
[Cm] [E] [F]
[E]
[Gb] So [Fm] let me just do a short tuxedine with chords to illustrate the [E] things I'm talking about
[B] [E]
[F] [E] [A]
[B] [A]
[B]
[A] [E] [A] [Am]
[A] [Am]
[E] [A] [E]
[A]
[Dm]
[A]
[Am] [F]
[A] [Am]
[A] [E]
[A] [Dm]
[F] [E] [F]
[B] [E]
You
[Ab]
