_ _ Hi and welcome to chord tutorial number _ 164.
Today we'll be discussing some old-school R&B chords.
The guitar is
tuned standard E A D G B E. _ _
_ Our first chord [Bb] is going to be a B flat major
chord.
_ _ Like that.
_ _ [N] We're holding down the B and high E string at fret 6.
We have a
finger on the G string fret 7 and we're holding down the A and D string at fret
[Bb] 8.
_ _ Like that. _
_ _ We're going to lower that a whole step [Ab] _
_ _ _ to get A flat major. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] Now we're
going to go back up [Bb] and we're going to grab hold of B flat major 7.
Like this. _ _ _ _
Now many of the R&B chords only covered the higher part of the chord.
So they'd
be nice and bright. _
So we're not playing any of the other strings or the low
strings on this.
Okay so we're doing that.
_ _ We've got our first finger on the 5th
fret high E.
6th [G] fret B string.
7th fret on the G string and [Bb] fret 8 on the D string.
_ _ _ And those are the only strings we're going to play.
_ We're [Ab] going to lower that
by a whole step _ _ for an A flat major 7.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
We're going to play a C7 by barring the
3rd [C] fret.
_ _ _ _ _ Like [Bb] that.
And we're going [N] to hold down the D string at fret 5 and
hold down the B string at fret 5 and strum from [C] the A string.
_ _ That's our C7 chord.
_ _ We're going to play an F chord like [F] this. _
_ _ _ We're [A] holding down the B and [B] high E string at the
1st fret.
_ G string 2nd fret and [G] the D string 3rd [F] fret.
_ _ And we're going to play an F
suspended 4 by [Bb] simply plugging in that pinky [Eb]
at the 3rd fret [C] on the G string.
So it's
going to be like [F] this.
_ _ _ _ _ _ That's F _ _ F _ suspended 4.
_ _ _ _ [G] We're going to go to B flat minor and B
flat minor 9 [Bbm] by doing this. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Okay.
We're barring fret 6 and we've got our ring
finger on the D string fret 8.
_ We're going to play that and then we're going to use our
pinky [G] at fret 8 [Bbm] on the high E string to go for the 9.
This is B minor. _
Put your pinky in.
_ B minor 9.
[Eb] Now let's add a double stop to that.
[D] _ _ [F] _ _
_ [N] Right there.
Okay.
So what I'm doing is going to the G string 5th fret and the B string 6th fret.
_ Picking it simultaneously [F] like this.
_ And then sliding up a whole [G] step.
[D] And coming back.
Okay.
So we've got this. _ _
_ Used to hear that in a whole lot of old R&B songs. _
[F] So we play this [Bbm] B flat minor. _ _ _
_ [F] _ _ _ We complement [Bbm] that chord. _
_ _ Next is A minor [Am] 7. _
Like that.
_ [C] We're barring fret 5. _
Bringing in the ring finger [E] to the D string fret [Gbm] 7 and the pinky to the [Gb] B string _ fret 8.
_ _ [G] _ Just strumming those strings right there.
_ _ Now if you want to add [E] a note you can always
[C] _
_ you can always go [E] up to that E right there.
[C] _ _ _ _ _ Alright.
[G] _
_ _ Now we're going to [Bb] lower that
by a whole step and that's going to be a G minor 7. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Gb] D minor 7 like [Dm] this.
_ _ _ _ Barring the 5th fret from the A [Ab] string down.
Bringing in the middle finger to the B string 6th fret.
And the ring finger to the D string [Bb] 7th fret.
[F] _ D minor 7.
_ _ _ [G]
D minor 9.
[F] _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] We've got our first finger
[N] on the D string 3rd fret.
We have a finger on the A string 5th fret.
On [E] the G string 5th fret.
And the B [Eb] string 5th fret.
[D] _ _
_ And that's D [C] minor 9.
To make [B] that D 9th we're just going to raise
[Gb] the first finger by one fret.
_ _ And now we've got D 9th. _ _
_ _ We're going to do a D minor simply by
holding down the D string at the 2nd fret and strumming from the D [Em] string.
