Well you've heard the saying, first things first.
We're going to forget about that.
We're going to
do second things first.
And the reason is, rather than starting at the beginning of this verse,
it's got some unorthodox picking in it.
So rather than trying to make you learn that right off the
bat, we're going to do a little bit of an exercise incorporating the second portion of this song.
That'll make the first portion easier.
Because we have a backward roll thrown in to a forward roll.
So we're not talking about a forward backward roll.
I'm talking about a forward roll.
We're all coming out of it.
So we're putting on the brakes on the first string, coming back to the
third and the fifth.
So that's kind of a nice little trick I like to throw in.
I'm going to
go ahead and play it from the top and you can hear me put that [Gm] in occasionally.
[G] [Gm]
[G] And that's a nice
little technique that I can [D] spice things up with a little bit.
So instead of starting from the top,
we're going to start from the middle of this.
From this hammer on.
And I'm going to play that
a few times so you can [C] hear what it sounds like.
Slow it down a little bit.
[Gm] [G] [Gm]
[G] Back those knuckles.
It's very hard for me to play this way because I'm trying to angle the banjo so you can see
this part and this.
I don't have one [Cm] of those dual screen cameras unfortunately.
So we're going to
just make do with this.
But let's start with this hammer on.
First fret, second string, [Gm] thumb
plucking and [C] plucking to that third fret ring finger.
[D] Now that's the beginning of a forward
roll with our thumb starting it off on the second.
Middle finger [G] playing the first string and then
thumb plucking the fifth.
Get that down first.
Hammer one five.
Now we're going to take that
up to the sixth fret with our ring finger and our first finger is going to pluck this
[D] at the second string with a little [G] a little sassy sort of tug.
I don't like that word sassy but
I guess that's what it is.
So after that [Ab] tug up that's the beginning of another forward roll.
So
that was first finger plucking that tug.
[Dm] Middle finger [Gm] plucks the first open and [C] then the thumb
plucks the [G] fifth.
Let's get that down first.
Hammer one [Fm] five two with the [Gm] tug one five.
That's
thumb middle thumb first [G] middle thumb.
There's not that [C] strange breakdown putting it [G] just sounds like
[D] because we're going to come to this on time.
That's second string third fret that's our next note.
And that's first finger plucking that.
[G] Let's get that in time.
Three two [Gm] three two three.
Now after that we're going to pluck the first string again with [G] our middle finger
[A]
[Bm] and then we're going to slide from the third fret our third [D] string I'm sorry fifth fret to the seventh.
[G]
We'll slow it down a little bit one two three.
[A] [G]
[D] Now that slide we did will be the beginning of another [G] forward roll.
So that's [Fm] thumb plucking [E] that slide middle [D] finger plucking the first string
[G]
and then the thumb plucking the fifth.
And [D] that's going to be another forward roll almost this is [G] where we back it up.
[Gm]
Slide one five three one.
That's where we put on the brakes because we're going to come back the
other way.
So it's hammer one [D] five slide [Gm] one five three one [D] and then we're going to come back to
the third string with our first finger [G] plucking and then the fifth last two notes three five.
So it's hammer [G] one five [Gm] two and five two three one five three one three five.
So we're going to take that and cycle a few times.
[G] I'll give you a little bit more of a break in between.
Rest.
Now for you guys are saying that's way too fast it is [Eb] I'm going to slow it down don't worry.
So we're [Gm] going to play.
