So what have we got in the case?
Well this is my first guitar.
This is the one, poor old dad, when I was 15.
It's as close as he could get to a real Fender Stratocaster.
And these are called a Hofner Super Solid.
What were they made of?
This is wood or is it sort of plywood?
Oh it's still wood.
It's still wood is it?
Yeah and they still copied that.
Oh yeah that little stratty thing there.
Yeah and with the very distinctive tremolo arm that's sort of contoured for the hand.
I absolutely love this thing even though of course it wasn't the real object of desire.
Well there's one over here we can compare it with.
Let's just have a look at this one.
Yeah there's the real McCoy.
They're almost identical, look at that.
Well I think to the untrained eye John.
You ended up with that one instead.
Yeah there was an old guy in the shop there, his head used to go around like his chin was always moving.
And I still remember him saying stick at it as I walked out of the shop.
Well you said stick at it.
He told me to stick at it.
Not to keep doing that.
You'll never make it.
And [F#] [E] hopefully it stays in tune.
Well hopefully it does.
It's actually in tune, not too bad.
[Em]
That's the first chord that you learn as an E minor there isn't it?
And it just makes that lovely mysterious rocking noise.
I never [G] remember getting a lesson [A] at all.
I would obviously be using the wrong fingers.
I [Em] probably used my first two fingers.
And I remember shaking all over and [G#] then [Em] learning to damp.
[A#] [C] Because I couldn't afford a damp I didn't have the nerve to ask poor old dad for an amp.
What did you use then?
I blew up the family [F] radio in fairly short order.
You'd get a little coaxial and stick it on.
And then a red and a black and stick it in the back of the radio.
You'd have one and a half watts of pulsating [F#] power.
[Am]
[A] [E] It sounds pretty good though for a first guitar.
The one I had was a Rossetti Lucky 7.
Do you remember those?
[A] Oh please.
Just because [Em] it was nowhere near a Strat doesn't alter the fact that you love your [Bm] first guitar.
It's kind [D] of important he kept it.
I remember not [G] wanting to let go of it the day I got it.
So it's possible that I slept with it.
It could be.
It [D] was certainly by the side.
[A] [G] It's kind of the right shape.
It's got that female shape.
It's close.
So Mark's [D] first choice of guitar is his Hofner Super Solid V2.
[Em] A Stratocaster replica with a black anodized metal scratch [D] plate and tremolo arm.
Bought for 50 quid [Em] by Mark's dad in 1964.
