[E] [C] [G] [D]
[Em] [C] Welcome to the new song cafe [G] at worshiptogether.com. Today we're here with
Matt Redman.
He'll be sharing his song Unbroken Praise.
So sit back and enjoy
this new song cafe.
Matt, it's great to be with you.
Thanks man.
And man it's great
to hear these new songs.
I got the privilege of being with you guys in
London.
Yeah, we like to have you over there.
Man.
In civilization.
The motherland.
But that recording, just these songs in that location that night at Abbey Road
Studios, all these worship leaders gathered up and we just had a night of
worship really and we just recorded it.
And it was such an amazing night [D#] and I
know all the preparation you guys did just leading up to this and the writing
of songs and this song we're looking at today it's called Unbroken Praise.
This
was one of those that just, and you always have one of these on every record.
It's like 11th hour.
Yeah.
You know, wait we're not done yet.
You know, we're going for it.
This is even beyond the 11th hour.
We finished at 1130 p.m. It's like the 11th in the half hour.
And I know that it came together and it was such a perfect song for the night.
I
felt like it really encapsulated a lot of the themes that was happening that
night.
But talk about this song.
I know you and Jonas worked on this together.
So yeah, literally finished at 1130 p.m. the night before and I tell you what
happened.
We had two versions of this song but I just knew they
weren't right and they were a little over complicated and we kept saying,
Jonas and I were saying to ourselves, look we keep saying we're trying to make this simple, we keep
over complicating it.
Come on, let's have one more go.
And so this is what came
about and it was really a sense of contending for it and fighting for it.
I
have to talk sometimes about a U2 quote where they talk about songwriting.
Sometimes it's like a playground, sometimes it's like a boxing ring.
And this felt like that.
It felt like we were contending for something and it's
beautiful how it all came together.
And [C#] what actually happened was on the day
before the recording, Nathan Knuckles, the producer, says to me, hey I want to let
you know we got your back and even if you wanted to bring a new
song at this point that would be fine with us.
We're with you.
This is going to
be brilliant.
It was kind of like a little Winston Churchill leadership speech.
And actually in all seriousness it released me because I kept
thinking I want to finish that Unbroken Praise song but band, with a day
before now, it's too late, I've missed it.
And he actually released me too.
So I
phoned Jonas who was flying in from LA that day and I said can you come
straight from the airport to Abbey Road, let's finish this song.
And that's
what happened.
And it was beautiful seeing [F#] people singing it that night.
It's just a simple worship song.
There's no real specific theme.
It's just a
little overflow of the heart to God.
Yeah and a great title.
In fact this song is
going to be the title of the new record.
Which is perfect.
It fits with the
theme of the songs.
You [Em] guys play it for us.
We'd love to hear it.
[C] [G] [D]
[Em] [C] [G]
[Em] [C] [G]
[Em]
[C] [G] [Em]
[C] [G] Unbroken praise be [Em] yours [G] God [D] forever.
All my [C] praise be [Em] yours God [D] forever.
Lord [C] take this life, [G] let it become your [Em] throne.
[C]
Unbroken [D] praise [G] be yours.
Let [Bm] my deeds [C] outrun my [G] words.
[D] Let [Em] my life [C] outweigh my [D] songs.
Unbroken praise [G] be yours.
Wow.
And I remember the night you guys introduced that, when you sang that
bridge, I was blown away.
Just that whole concept of
let my deeds outrun my words.
Like what I do.
Let my life shine brighter than the
songs that I sing.
I think for worship leaders and really for any
Christian, it's just such a powerful statement.
It's more than just
what we say.
I felt that when we wrote it.
You [F#] see a lyric,
that's something I really want to say.
I love it in whoever's song.
That's exactly what my heart's trying to say.
That was definitely one of those moments.
Yeah, really beautiful.
Walk us
through what you're playing here.
Some pretty simple chords.
Yeah, super simple.
You wouldn't have to sing in G.
It can work in [G] a step down or even
two probably.
But I like it here.
I like having to reach for that note
[C]
[G] in the
G.
That's really it for the verse.
And then the chorus.
[C] C, E minor, [Em] D.
Same again.
[D]
This time, [C] [G] we're going to go the G over B.
[C] And then [D] [G] the intro and the passing
chords off to chorus [Em] one.
Just [C] simple E minor, C, [G] [D] G, D over F sharp.
And then the [Em] bridge.
Let my days.
E minor, C, [G]
G.
[D] A little passing chord, the D over F sharp.
[Em] Let my life [D] outweigh my songs.
E minor, C, D.
So it's all super simple.
Yeah, really simple to play.
But beautiful lyric.
Great ideas.
Thanks so much.
