Hello everybody it is Corey from Gemini Guitar and in today's lesson we'll be looking at some Metallica style riffs.
So there's a variety of rhythms on display here
and I thought this would be a good technique focus [G] because we're going to be looking at
combining 16th notes with eighth notes.
We've got some reverse gallop and
I don't know whether there's any gallop rhythms in there, but there's definitely some reverse galloping and some not odd groupings
but lots of nice mixtures of those [Eb] combinations.
Okay, so in example one we are starting out with two eighth notes followed by a reverse gallop rhythm and then two groupings of
four lots of sixteenth notes.
So we'll take [E] a look at that.
[C] [E]
[F] [E]
[F] [E]
[F]
[E]
Notice that we've got the F5 power chord there in the middle of things.
For bar two we're going to be starting out again two [Eb] eighth notes reverse gallop and then the same rhythm.
So essentially this bar has got the same rhythm, but
the power chord is different.
So we're going to be going up into [Abm] the sixth position and
that's the tritone interval from the root.
The root in all these riffs is the low [E] E string.
[C]
[E] So let's have a look at bar two.
[Bb] [E]
[Bbm] [E]
[Bb] [E]
[Bb] [E]
[Ab]
And so basically what we're doing from this point is
we're throwing in a different power chord each time.
So for bar three it will be the third position for the [G] G5 [C] and
then resolving then to the low [Gb] E power chord for the last [E] bar of the riff.
Okay, so what we're going to do now is
play through the whole thing
with the tab on screen and then you'll be able to see me then with the click track.
[F] [E]
[Bb] [E]
[F] [E]
[Bbm] [E]
[C]
[E]
Okay, so for example two in the first two bars we're going to be using the
identical notes and rhythm.
So we're going to be starting off with the low E string and
[Eb]
then we're going to proceed then to the F note next [D] door to that with four lots of [E] sixteenths and an eighth [F] note.
[N]
So this is what we'll be doing for both bars.
[E]
[F]
[E] [F]
[E] [F]
[E] [F]
In the last half of the riff we're just going [G] to change the notes that we [Bb] do.
So in bar [Ab] three it will be [Am] from the third fret to the first fret and
[G]
[F] [G]
[F] [G]
then into the last bar simply the low E string.
[E]
[G] [Gb]

[E] [F] [G]
[F] [E]
Okay, [F] moving into the last riff.
So this one's in 12-8 rhythm.
We're switching between the palm muted sixth string open and then the power chords
with the first finger on the fifth [E] string.
[N]
So if you look in the first bar
we're going to be using the seventh, the eighth, the fifth and back to the eighth and then the seventh position.
So it will look and sound like this.
[E] [F]
[E]
[F] [D] [F] [E]
Now in the second bar of things it's the same rhythm.
We're just going to be changing up right the very end with the sixth position power chord on the sixth string.
[F] [Bb]
[E] [F] [E] [F]
[Bb] [C] In the third bar it's the same as bar one.
I'm pretty sure just checking.
Yes it [E] is.
[F]
[E] [F] [E]
[F] [E] [F] [E]
[B] And then to finish off with them we're going to do this cool melodic idea
[N] using the Phrygian scale.
So we've got the
minor second interval first up.
That's the F note on string five.
We're going to palm mute all this.
We're going to go eight seven five, eight seven five, five and six on the fifth and sixth string I should say.
[D] [C]
[A] [N] And then we're going to go from the root note E over to the minor second and then the minor third there.
[G] [A] And then we're going to play the seventh, tenth and ninth fret to finish off on the fourth [Am] string.
[G] So [F] we get
[E] [C] [Am]
[C]
[E] [F]
[E] [F]
[Bb] [E] [F]
[E] [F]
[E] [F] [E]

[B]
[E] [F] [E]
[Bb] [E] [F] [E]

[E] [F]

Okay, [Eb] so that wraps things up for today's lesson.
