Good to meet you all.
Now how did you guys get involved with the Chieftains?
At first it seems like an odd pairing, but I guess not really.
Well, Patty Maloney called me in my hotel in Dublin when I was on tour there one time
and asked me to come in and record with them.
And then I did a television special in Ireland and they [C] came in and were my guests
and over the course of the years we've recorded together and had a great time.
[N] Now you're extremely popular in Ireland, aren't you?
It's great fun over there.
I mean, how did that happen?
Were you just recording here and the record started to sell and then you went over?
Well, Mara O'Connell, who's very popular over in Ireland, she's an Irish singer,
had a hit with one of my songs.
And then I had recorded the song From a [B] Distance six years ago
and it became a massive number one hit over there.
And [C] so it just kind of [N] snowballed.
The last time I saw you was at the Boston Tea Party.
It cost me $3.50 to get in to see The Who.
Yeah, that was a long time ago.
God, that was like
That was a great gig.
That was a good place in Boston, wasn't it?
Well, it was fun being able to go to small clubs.
I mean, you just don't, you know, I mean, you go to gigs now and there's only 18,000.
Yeah, I know, but just to hear bands in that kind of setting.
It'd be nice to go back, wouldn't it?
Oh, yeah, it's fun.
You guys played there quite a bit, right?
Is it still there, the building?
You know, I don't know if the building is even still there or not.
I think the police just went over there with a crusher and
That was kind of
Everybody knew the Fillmore East, but nobody picked up on the tea party.
But that was a good gig.
Oh, that was terrific.
How do you think fans who like Behind Blue Eyes will respond to this version?
Is it
Well, it's quite interesting, really, because you say when
I'm going to sing a Who song with the Chieftains and people kind of can't imagine it.
But it actually works.
It really does work.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
What they think of it, I don't know.
I enjoy it.
Did you listen to Irish music growing up?
I mean, I love this band.
I mean, when you do a rock and roll show, [C#] you come off stage and your head is ringing.
[C] And there's nothing better than to put on a Chieftains album and just lay back and just
[N] It's just wonderful music.
Well, they're very funny, because they were rehearsing.
I walked over to introduce them and the guy goes,
Are you the host?
Where can we get a pint?
I don't have a pint with me.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
If you ever want to meet the Chieftains, just look for the nearest pub in the break.
Because they're in it.
So what do you guys have planned for tomorrow night's concert?
Well, I think we're just going to
It's great fun.
I think I've got part of my band here with me and I think Roger's got a couple of people with him.
And then we're all going to play together.
So it's going to be great.
It's impossible to plan anything with the Chieftains.
They invite you to a show and it kind of runs as though it's going to be a little tiny club.
And then you end up and it's like the Universal Amphitheatre.
And the atmosphere is really like it's a tiny little club.
OK, when we come back, Roger, you're going to do a song with them.
And then you'll do a song a little later in the program with them.
OK, be right back right after this.
This night show [Em] will return in a moment.
