Maria McKee was the lead singer for the LA band Lone Justice.
After only two albums, the band fell apart, but the 24-year-old singer is now drawing rave reviews
for her debut [D] solo album called Maria McKee.
Music editor Martin McKeon recently spoke [F] with her.
Maria, thank [Db] you for coming on the show this early morning.
[Fm] Thank you.
You were in a band [Ebm] Lone Justice and now you're [Em] solo and your sound is a little bit different.
Why the [Bb] change?
Um, [N] it was just a natural evolution, I suppose, you know.
It didn't feel like a band anymore to me and I thought I should be more honest with myself
and everyone around me [Cm] and start [Bb] over and strip it down.
And this is [Bb] much more intimate and it's much more liberating.
[E] Also, reading your influences, Little Willie John, Elmore James, Patsy Cline,
[G] what was your [Ab] upbringing like to where people like that would influence you, your [G] singing?
Well, I used to [Bb]
hang around in [Gb] the LA Underground club scene when I was [F] a teenager and then I used
to go see bands like Los Lobos and X and the Blasters and they were all playing [D] like this
progressive form of [Bb] traditional music, you know, and they were [Abm] all my heroes and they used to
listen to all those people.
So I started buying records [B] when I was a teenager and just stocked up
on as many [Eb] as I could find, you know.
And from Little Willie John to [C] Edith Piaf, [N] there's a story that your mother pointed her out.
Yeah, my mother, when I was 16 years old, some TV station had a special on Edith Piaf and my mother
[Bb] threw the [Ab] headphones off my head.
I was [F] listening to, I don't know, Bruce Springsteen or something
and she goes, come out here now and watch this.
And I [Gm] did and it pretty much influenced me for a long time.
I've heard [Eb] you say that [E] you'd wished you'd grown up in a Southern Baptist black [A] church.
Why?
Because I'd be a really [Ab] great singer.
[F] [Bm] Does gospel come into [Bb] play, you know, in [Abm] your mind when you're thinking of
how you're going to [F] approach a song as part of the influences?
Well, that's not [Eb] something I really think about because I did actually, I [Bb] was raised singing in
church [Ab] and I've always loved gospel music so it's just been sort of ingrained in my head and
[F] that's one of the more natural forms as well as country music that just sort of [B] comes out.
You're touring with Neil Young and that [Gb] is over now.
Are you going to be going back on the road?
[G] Yes, we're starting a European tour [Bb] in Galway, Ireland.
And would you sing a little bit for us this [D] morning?
What are you going to say?
Nobody's child.
All [Bm] right.
Thank [Eb] you.
Ladies and gentlemen, Ria McKee.
