[C] Dear sir, I write this note to you, [G] to tell you [C] of me plight,
[F] For at the [C] time of writing, I [D] am not a [G] pretty sight.
[F] Me body [C] is all black and blue, [F] me face a [Am] deathly grey,
[C] And I write this note to say why [G] Murphy's not at [C] work today.
While working on the fourteenth floor, [D] some bricks I had [C] to clear,
[F] But to toss them [C] down from such a [D] height was not a good [G] idea.
[F] The foreman [C] wasn't very pleased, [F] he is an [Am] awkward sod,
[C] He said I'd have to cart them [G] down the ladders [C] in me hod.
Now shifting all those bricks by [G] hand it was so very [C] slow,
So [F] I hoisted [C] up a barrel and [A] secured a rope [G] below.
[F] But in me [C] haste to do the job [F] I was too [Am] blind to see,
[C] That a barrel full of building bricks [D] was heavier [C] than me.
And so when I untied the [G] rope, the barrel fell like lead,
[Am] And clinging tightly to the rope [A] I started up [G] instead.
[F] I shot up [C] like a rocket, till [F] till my dismay [Am] I found,
[C] That half way up I met [G] the bloody barrel [C] coming down.
Now the barrel broke me shoulder [G] as to the ground [C] it sped,
[F] And when I reached the top I banged the pulley [D] with me head.
[Am] I come on [C] tightly numb with [F] shock from this almighty [Am] blow,
[C] And the barrel spills out half the bricks [G] from fourteen [C] floors below.
Now when these bricks had fallen [D] from the barrel to the [C] floor,
[F] I then [C] outweighed the barrel [D] and so started down [G] once more.
[F] Still clinging [C] tightly to the rope [F] me body [Am] racked with pain,
[C] And half way down I met the bloody barrel once again.
Now the force of this collision [G] half way down [C] the office block,
[F] Caused multiple [C] abrasions [D] and a nasty [G] state of shock.
[F]
Still clinging [C] tightly to the rope [F] I fell [Am] toward the ground,
[C] And I landed on the broken bricks [G] the barrel had scattered [C] round.
I lay there groaning on the ground, [G] I thought I'd [E] passed the worst,
[F] But the barrel hit [C] the pulley wheel [A] and then the [G] bottom burst.
A [F] shower of bricks [C] rained down on me, [F] I didn't [Am] have the hope,
[C] As I lay there bleeding on the ground [G] I let go the bloody [C] rope.
[G] It started down [C] once more, [F] and it landed [C] right across [D] me,
As I lay there [G] on the floor.
[F] It broke three ribs [C] and my left [F] arm, and I can [Am] only say,
[C] I hope you'll understand why [G] Murphy's not at work [F] today.
