Dear sir, I write this note to you to [G] tell you of [C] me plight,
[F] For at the [C] time of writing I [D] am not a [G] pretty sight.
Me [C] body is all black and blue, [F] me face a [Am] deathly grey,
[C] And I write this note to say why [G] Murphy's not at work [C]
today.
While working on the fourteenth floor [D] some bricks I [C] had to clear,
[F] But to toss them down from [C] such a [D] height was not a good [G] idea.
[F] The foreman [C] wasn't very pleased, [F] he is an awkward [Am] sod,
[C] He said I'd have to cart them [G] down the ladders in [C] me hod.
Now shifting all those bricks [E] by [G] hand it was so very [C] slow,
So [F] I hoisted up [C] a barrel and [D] secured a rope [G] below.
[F] But in me haste [C] to do the job [F] I was too blind [Am] to see,
[C] That a barrel full of building bricks [D] was heavier [C] than me.
And so when I untied the rope [G] the barrel fell like [C] lead,
[F] And clinging tightly [C] to the rope [A] I started up [G] instead.
[F] I shot up like [C] a rocket till [F] to my dismay I [Am] found,
[C] That half way up I met the [G] bloody barrel coming [C]
down.
Now the barrel broke me shoulder as [G] to the ground [C] it sped,
[F] And when I [C] reached the top [D] I banged the pulley with me head.
I [Am] clung on [C] tightly numb with shock [F] from this almighty [Am] blow,
[C] And the barrel spilled out half the bricks [G] from fourteen floors [C]
below.
Now when these bricks had fallen [G] from the barrel to the [C]
floor,
[F] I then outweighed the [C] barrel and [Am] so started down [G] once more,
[F] Still clinging tightly [C] to the rope [F] me body lacked [Am] with pain,
[C] And half way down I met the [G] bloody barrel once [C]
again.
Now the force of this collision [G] half way down the office [C] block,
[F] Caused multiple [C]
abrasions [D] and a nasty [G] state of shock,
[F] Still clinging tightly [C] to the rope [F] I fell [Am] towards the ground,
[C] And I landed on the broken bricks [G] the barrel had scattered [C] around.
I lay there groaning on the ground [G] I thought I'd passed [E] the worst,
[F] But the barrel hit [C] the pulley wheel [A] and then the bottom [G] burst.
[F] A shower of bricks rained down on me I didn't have [Am] the hope,
[C] As I lay there bleeding on the ground I [G] let go the [C] bloody rope.
[G] It started down [C] once more and [F] it landed right [C] across me,
[A] As I lay there on [G] the floor [F] it broke three [C] ribs and my left arm,
[F] And I can only [E] say,
[Am] [C] I hope you'll understand why [G] Murphy's not at work [F] today.
