Paul McCartney on Buddy Holly and writing with John Lennon chords

[E] You were telling me earlier on that you and John writing was Buddy Holly, that will be the day?
Yeah, you know, most of the stars then were kind of good looking guys.
Eberle Brothers?
Yeah, well the Eberles, yeah, they did play, so we loved them.
And then you had the Horn-Rimmed.
Which is Buddy.
[Eb] Now that was great for John, because John wore Horn-Rimmed.
And he wore them, but any time there was any girls around, he'd whip them off.
And then he couldn't see a bloody thing, you know, he'd be like, he'd blow his mouth.
So he'd have to say, and then when Buddy came up, oh yeah, put these on, so he could get his Horn-Rimmed on.
Legitimized the use of the Horn-Rimmed.
One day we were writing together, John and I, it was around Christmas.
And he used to come down to me, we'd write in the evening, and he'd walk back up to his house, which is like a mile away or something.
And he's walking back one night, and I say, you know, if there was any possibility of girls around, he wouldn't wear the Horn-Rimmed.
He's walking back, and I saw him the next day, he said, do you know, he said, man, those people on that corner of Booker Avenue, he said, they're mad.
He said, what time was it when I left you last night?
I said, I don't know, about 11.30.3 or something. He said, yeah. He said, well, I went past their house, and they were out still playing cards in front of their house. I said, I can't believe it. So I go by there later, and it's a nativity scene. He thought they were sitting outside. Oh, playing cards. It's, you know, Mary and Joseph bent over the baby Jesus. [E] Get your glasses on, man. That is the definition of blind to the back. That is funny. But yeah, and we love Buddy, and I think the other reason we love Buddy was that he wrote. He wrote his stuff. Elvis didn't write his stuff. Loved Elvis, but he didn't write his stuff. So Buddy wrote and played and played the solos. So it was a self-contained guy, which is what we were trying to emulate. Which is what we were trying to emulate. And we were trying to, I mean, the first thing we could not work out was the beginning of That'll Be The Day. [G] And then [Eb] I think George came [Db] on. He got in. He was like, what? How did you do that? [Gb] [E] Well, [D] that'll be the day when you say goodbye. [A] That'll be the day when you make me cry. [D] You say you're going to leave. You know it's a lie. [A] [E] That'll be the day. Well, [A] [Eb] that was a. [E] [D] Oh, yeah. Wow. What a riff.
