[F#m] [E] [F#m]
[E] [F#m] [E] [Bm]
[E] [D] [A] [Bm] [A]
[D] [A] [E] [A] [D] [A] [E] [A]
[D] [A] [E] [A] [N] This is the guitar lesson for Paul Simons, me and Julio down at the school yard.
Alright, so make sure your guitar [E] is in standard E tuning.
[G#] Let's talk about the intro.
Go up to the fifth [N] fret.
How the song starts [A] off is like this.
[D]
[E] [F#m] [E] [G] Alright, what we're doing is we're doing our chords just like down here, but we're doing them up here.
Okay, so they're a little bit higher in pitch.
So what I'm doing is I'm making a triad, which is you're going to bar with your pointer finger the E and the B string.
Take your middle finger, put that on the [A] sixth fret G string.
That's chord number one, alright.
[Am] Next chord, keep these fingers still on here.
Take your ring finger, put that on [Cm] the seventh fret G [D] string.
Take your pinky, put that on the seventh fret B string.
That's your D, that's your second chord.
[A] So we have A, [D] D.
One more chord to [E] go, alright.
[D] Make a D down here.
Slide it up two frets.
[E]
That's going to give you an E, okay.
You see just a higher [G] pitch.
So, [A] so far we [D] have
[A] [D]
[E] Those are all the chords in the intro, okay.
[C#] So now, how that chord [A] progression goes is A, [D] [A] D, A, [E]
E.
Alright, I'm going to play [A] it slow for you.
So it [D] goes
[A]
[E] [A] [Bm] [A] [E] [A] [D]
[E] [N] You've got to know how to mute with your left hand for this song, okay.
And what I'm doing when I say muting with my left hand is I'm just taking the tension off the strings.
So they stop ringing, okay.
Watch very closely, I'll do it [A] again.
[D] [A] [E]
[F#m] [Bm] Alright, [E] [A]
when I did the
[N] I was doing down, up, down, up.
But I muted the down strokes and I let the up strokes ring.
So watch again, okay.
[A]
[D] [F#m]
[E] Alright, you get the idea?
Now [Em] let's slide down.
That's [N] the hardest part of the song, I promise you.
It only gets easier from here on out.
So now I'm going to play that same chord [G] progression but down here.
So that's A, D, A, E.
[A] [Em]
[A] [D] [A] [E] [A] [D] [A] [E]
[G#] Alright, so that's the chord progression that the song always goes back to, okay.
[N] So let me grab my
I wrote down all the chords here.
Let's see here.
The song starts off, I think the lyrics say
The mama pajama rolled out of bed and she went down to the police station.
Okay, so this part of the song, the chord [A] progression is going to be A, [D] D, [E] [A] E, A.
Okay, so the mama, A, rolled out of bed and went down to the police station.
[D] That's when it goes to D.
When papa [G] found [E] out, E, then began to shout and started the [Em] investigation [A] back to A.
Okay, so it should sound like this.
[D]
[E]
[A] [Em] Alright, then the part that [A] goes
It was against the [E] law, E.
It was against the [A] law, A.
What mama [E] saw, E.
It was [A] against the law, A.
Okay, [E] so, it was against the law.
[A] [E]
[A] Alright.
[Bm] And [N] now we go back to that same chord progression, the A, D, E, A.
Okay, the same as the mama pajama rolled out of bed, [A] so it's
[D]
[E] [A]
[N] Alright, now this is where it changes, okay.
And we can call this the pre-chorus or the
maybe going into the chorus, okay.
And what this chord progression is, is this.
And this is the part where it goes
Well, I'm on [D] my way, it's E.
I don't know [A] where I'm going, A.
I'm on my way, [D] D.
And then it goes, I'm taking my time, but I [G] don't know where
So it goes, [A] [D] A, D.
[E]
It's kind of like a little [A] fill.
You're transitioning really [C] fast between those chords, okay.
So, once [D] again
Well, I'm on my way, D.
I don't know where I'm [A] going, A.
[G] Well, I'm on my [D] way, D.
And then it goes, [A] [D] A, [E] D, E.
And it goes, goodbye [D] Rosie, which is D.
Queen of Corona, [A] A.
And then it goes back to the riff of the whole song, which is
Me and Julio down at the schoolyard, which is
[E]
[A] [D] [A] [E] [A] [D] [A] [E]
[G] Alright.
And then a little flute solo comes up, okay.
I don't know who's playing the flute, but
What you want to play for the rhythm guitar part behind the flute solo is where [E] it's
Where he says, well, I'm on my way.
So this is what it should sound like, okay.
It [D] goes, D.
[A] A.
D.
[D] A, [E] D, E.
[D] D.
[A] A.
A, D, [E] A.
[A] [A]
[E] [A] A, D, A.
[E] [A] E.
[D]
[A] [E] Whoa!
Alright, he stays [C#] on E that last time, and he [G#] just goes up, down, up, [E] down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up.
[G] [G#] So, the trick to learning the strumming pattern with this [D] song
I played it sloppy, I know.
That's to show you [G]
where all these chords are, so I can say the lyrics with it.
But what I want you to do is listen to the original recording.
And if you can't get the left-handed [A] mutes down, what [G] I want you to do is just do down, up, down, up, [G#] down, up.
And just transition [D] through the chords [G#] with the song, okay.
You should be able to learn this song in no time, okay.
You just gotta stick with it and keep practicing, okay.
[N] So, that's the entire song.
I hope you guys have enjoyed it.
