[Eb] _ [N] Hi guys Dave here with a new riff lesson for you today
We're looking at got to be real by show Ling a bit of a classic this
_ _ Before I show you that to riff I'll show you the chords that are underneath it.
These are played by the keyboard _
[C] _ _ _ So the harmony [B] is we have an E flat major [G] 9
[Bb] If you used to play it on the guitar that would be 6th [Eb] fret on the A
_ [Ab] 5th fret on the D
[G] _ 7th fret on the [Fm] G and [Gb] 6th fret on the [Bb] B string
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] That holds for two beats and then [C] we have a _ _
D7 [B] flat 9
_ _ those notes are
5 on the [Gb] a
_ _ [B] 4 on the D
_ [F] 5 on the [C] G
4 on the B
_ _ That holds for two beats [B]
and then [D] finally for the second bar for the entire bar [F] is a G minor 7
[Gm] _ _ _ So on [G] the guitar you just bar across the third fret across all [Ab] six strings and hold down the fifth fret on the A [Bb] string _ _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ So [Abm] that's the harmony underneath the riff _
The actual guitar part itself is just
third intervals being played
_ _ So the [G] first shape is just the [Am] third fret on the B and [Bb] G strings _
_ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ [Gb] We strum it like this.
It's just gonna go [Gm] down up down up
_ _ _ [Bb] Like that we [Ab] go down to [C] this shape, which is first fret on the B second on the G
[Am] _ _ _ It's a single down strum on that
[A] So you get
_ _ _ [Bbm] _
_ _ _ Then [B] third shape we [F] move
Up to here.
This is the fourth fret on the B [Gb] fifth fret on the G
[Bb] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Ab] Just do a single down strum on that
[Bb] Then back to our third fret shape
fret [Gm] up and
_ Then [Gb] back down to this lower [Am] shape for a down
_ _ [C] _ _ _ Together it [Ab] sounds like this
_ [Gm] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Cm] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
[N] _ _ _ _ Okay
And then for the second half of the riff we're back to that third fret shape _
Again down up down [Gm] up
_ _ _ _ [A]
[Ab] Then to this shape again for a down
[Gm] _ _ _
[Em] _ _ And back to the [Bb] third shape [Gm] for a down then an up
_ _ [Em] And when we play this it's a bit more staccato.
[Dm] So play the first one [Gm] relax it
_ And then put it on again for the up [Bb] and _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Db] then we [Ab] end up on this [C] low shape again
for a down stroke
_ So that that sounds like [Gm] this _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ [G] That's it
[Fm] Slightly the whole [Gm] thing together
_ _ _ _ _ [Cm] _ _
[A] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _
[Am] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _
_ [D] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ [Cm] _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ Probably a [G] couple of other things to add
about this riff
[D] _ When I play it so that I can strum fairly [Gm] freely
_ _ _ [N] And not worry about other strings.
What I tend to do is I will mute off the surrounding strings
with any available left hand finger
_ So feel free to find the fingering which works best for [Ab] you _
You [Db] can do it many different ways.
So yeah, it's personal choice
[A] But you notice when [F] I play the first shape my second [Gm] finger _
_ _ _ [Bb] _ _ Strings around it
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ [C] When I go to this shape the underneath of my [G] index finger is choking off the first string and the side of my [Eb] finger
_ [G] Is lightly muting off the D [Am] string as well
_ So it's [Cm] a combination of effective [Em] left hand muting but also kind of strumming in a smaller area [Bb] than where you would normally _ _
[Cm] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Bb] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ And I find whenever I'm kind of [Ab] strumming out small shapes [Db] like this.
That's what I do
I rely on my left hand [G] a lot more to kind of choke off any unwanted string noise
_ _ Okay
[N] Sound-wise he's using I think there's a little bit of a chorus effect just a very light chorus effect on the guitar
_ I used _
The neck pickup on the strap to get this sound [G] I think it's fairly close to what we hear on the record
It's quite low in the mix.
So it's not that easy to pick it out
_ _ _ And that's the whole thing really.
I hope you enjoy this lesson [C] and I'll see you for one again real soon
_ _ [F] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ [Eb] _ _ [G] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _

[G] _ 7th fret on the [Fm] G and [Gb] 6th fret on the [Bb] B string
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] That holds for two beats and then [C] we have a _ _
D7 [B] flat 9
_ _ those notes are
5 on the [Gb] a
_ _ [B] 4 on the D
_ [F] 5 on the [C] G
4 on the B
_ _ That holds for two beats [B]
