[N] Ladies and gentlemen, our next guest is a Texas singer-songwriter, and this is the most
recent CD.
It's entitled The Grifters' Hymnal.
Please welcome to the program Ray Wiley Hubbard.
[E] [Em] [E]
When I was a young man about 21 years old, y'all, all I [D] wanted was [E] a stripper girlfriend
and a gold-tobless pop.
Be careful of the things you wish for, you might get them.
There was a nightclub in [D] Dallas, [E] it's called Mother [Em] Blues.
[E] As well, Lightning Hopkins played and Freddie King even paid some dues.
And all the dealers and gamblers and young white hipsters, all made the scene.
The girl at the door who checked IDs was just 16.
[A] It was not a place for [G] law-abiding [E] citizens.
But Jackie Jones, he had him a habit, he just couldn't stop.
Said, give me $500, I'll sell you my last ball of gold [G]-type.
[E] I drove my daddy's car down to Ross Avenue and I [D] sold it.
[E] I guess you should have told him you looted due to police and someone [D] stole it.
[A] It was just the first [G] of many bad [E] decisions I had to [D] make for the [E] next 20 years.
[A] But I had [G] me a guitar.
[E]
[G] [E] Now it's 2 a.m. and everybody's gone but the band, the dealers and Jack [D] Jones.
[E] And then the girls from the Landing [A] Strip [Em] will have come over after they put their clothes back on.
[E] So I'm at Mother Blues, I'm sitting on an amp, I'm playing Twist and [Em] Shout.
And this tall, [A] a drink of water walk [Em] in, look now, she might have to shoot her way [D] out.
[A] She come up to me, [G] she said, you know anything good [E] on that guitar?
I didn't say nothing, I just kept on [A] playing.
She said, have [G] you ever heard this song called [E] Polk Slatted Annie?
I just kept on playing.
[A] She said, every time [G] I hear that song, my [E] insides feel like warm [D] butter.
[E] I just want to [A] take off my clothes and [G] dance around in my underwear.
[E] I said, down in Louisiana, [Em] [E] where the alligator grows some mean.
That's all I knew of it.
But it was enough, me and this dancer, we hit it off like a metaphor.
[Em] [E] Ah, but we broke up and she went to [E] Hollywood.
She married her an [D] actor.
[Em] She got a job dancing on the Hudson [E] Brothers TV show and modeling lipstick for Max [A] Factor.
I'm [G] glad she done all right.
[E] I got over her eventually.
And now me, I never busted through the gates until the big time as a rock and roll star.
For 40 years, I just carried around an old gold top guitar.
[C] [E] But love and fate are mysterious things in this funky old world.
[G] [E] It was 23 years ago, I ended up marrying that mother blues door [A] girl.
We had us a boy, he [G] 19 years old, now [E] he playing [A] guitar.
[Em] That's him right there, [A] and that's Paul [G] Goldtop as a matter [E] of fact.
I don't know if he's going to hang his life on a guitar or not,
but I'm very [G] grateful for the [E] time I get to share [A] the stage with [Em] my son Lucas.
[E] I'm very grateful to be here with Kyle Snyder and John Michael [Am] tonight.
[E] I'm very grateful to Dave Letterman for letting me be on his TV show.
And the days that [Bm] I keep my gratitude [E] higher than my expectations,
[Bm] I [Em] have really good days.
Been a [E] damn fine day.
I mean, come on.
How [N] good is that?
That was lovely.
Thank you, Dave.
Nice guitar, good for you.
Thank you very much.
Gray Wiley Hubbard, ladies and gentlemen.
This is the most recent effort, the Grifters' hymnal.
I can't thank you folks enough for being here.
Have a great year.
We should, like, tour.
No.
We're not doing that next week.
All right, let's go.
Let's get a van and go.
Thanks for watching.
