When I was at Truth or Consequences, it's very near a town called Silver City.
And there was a sort of a tragedy that happened when I [E] was a kid, and I always felt like it needed a song.
And I've only written a song within the last four or five years.
When I was thinking about writing this song, it seemed like it needed to be a kind of a bluegrass flavor.
Because in bluegrass, you know, either someone gets killed or someone gets married, one of the two.
On my way to Silver City, was a man I [B] met at sea.
[F#m] Driving through [A]
[A] the Black Range Mountains, when [E] in on [D] a [A] walking back street.
[G] You [E] said meet me by the river, [E]
we would start our brand new [B] life.
Your daddy [F#] swore [E] you were [A] his treasure, you [E] would never [D] [A] be my wife.
A [G] [E]
[B] thousand tears [E] fall in the darkness, a [B] thousand times I've [E] wondered why.
[C#m] How it hurts now [A] to remember, [E] I've forgotten [D] [A] how to cry.

[F#m] Seven [E] miles [A] down that highway, [E] when I [D] saw all those [A] flashing lights.
[E] On my way to Silver City, fighting back [B] those memories.
[F#m] Lord I tried, [E] but I [A] can't outrun them, [F#m] [E] guess they'll [D] all always [A] follow me.
[E] A [B] thousand tears fall [E] in the darkness, [B] a thousand [E] times I've wondered why.
