[C#m] [E]
[C] Welcome back to the Texas music [Am] scene.
You know, in 1992, Slade Cleves won the prestigious [A#] New Folk Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
Like [E] previous winners Steve Earle and Robert Earl [Am] Keene, his ability to tell a story through song is even better today than it was back [Dm] then.
Beautiful thing I [D] wrote, I think it was in 2004.
I think it was right after the election actually, the presidential election.
And I was feeling a little disheartened and the framework of that song was I was obsessed with a Bob Dylan song called Things Have Changed.
I was just playing that song [D] over and over again and I wanted to create in my own song a sense of cynicism but a sense of hope underneath the cynicism.
Stephen King wrote the liner notes for my record and he described the song Beautiful Thing as reluctantly optimistic.
And so I think he kind of nailed it with that.

[Em] [Am] It's a beautiful [C] thing.
It's a beautiful [D] thing.
[G]
I wonder how our leaders would ever deceive us.
[Em] While the profiteers count their cash and praise [C] Jesus.
The price sings another chorus [G] of let freedom ring.
We send our boys away to come home in parts.
[Em] Leave the lies with all our hearts.
[Am] It's a beautiful thing.
It's [G] a beautiful thing.
[C] Ascension is a song only fools and [G] traitors sing.
Just look at all the benefits your global [D] economy brings.
[G] Say we sing the gilded ages song.
[Em] The 20th century's dead and gone.
It's a beautiful [C] thing.
It's [G] a beautiful thing.

[Em] I get up each morning and try to tell [G] the tale.
[C] So until my dying day [G] whatever fate may bring.
Dark age looms.
There's evil out here.
[Em] So now I still believe in the goodness of man.
[Am] It's a beautiful thing.
[G] It's a beautiful thing.

It's [G] a beautiful thing.

[G#] Well folks, that about puts [E] this one to bed.
Thanks again for watching and remember to get out and support Texas music and Texas [F#m] artists.
Because as we like to say around [A] here, Texas is not just
