_ [Gm] Right, so today we're going to do Eddie Vedder's [Am] Society.
It's a great song, it's from a really good film, [N] Into the Wild.
If you haven't seen that film, I'd highly recommend it.
_ We're going to look at the chorus, the verse, the intro and also the solo.
There'll be a good close-up of the solo.
So, let's get to it.
So, [Bm] first things first, we'll look at the rhythm.
In the right hand you've got 1, 2, 3 and 4 and.
So, down, down, down, up, down, up. _ _
_ _ _ Sometimes it's nice to [Bb] pick [Bm] that 1.
1, 2, 3 and 4 and, 1, 2, 3 and 4 and.
Just to pick that [G] bass note, give it a bit of variety.
[A] That's the same for the whole thing.
So, you can practice it on that intro B [Bm] minor.
_ 8 bars of that. _
Then you're into the verse.
[G] Which [A] goes, D, A, 2 D's.
[C] A bar of D, G, 2 bars of A.
A bar of G, [Ab] A, 2 bars of B minor.
Then the same, G, A, 2 bars of B minor.
[D] So, _ D, _ _ [A] A, _ [D] 2 bars of D. _ _ _ _ _
D again.
D again.
G, [G] _ _
2 bars [A] of A. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] G, _ bar [A] of A, _ [Bm] 2 bars of B minor. _ _ _
_ _ [G] Bar of G, _ _ [A] bar of A, 2 [G] bars of B [Bm] minor again. _ _

So, [D] D, _ _ _ _ A, _ [A] as the song goes on, he plays the chorus [G] 2 [Bm]-3 times.
_ _ Again, sometimes he sits on that B minor. _ _ _
Right, we'll go into the solo.
[A] Right, so the solo focuses mainly on that B minor [D] pentatonic. _ _ _ _
You're mainly in position 1, there's a [G] bit of position 2.
[Ab] And there's [G] that extra added note from the minor scale, _ at 8 on the B string.
_ [A] _ _ _ So, there's a main theme to the solo.
_ He plays a hammer [D]-on, and [G] then plays the note behind.
And that's where we start.
So, you've got the D string, 7th fret.
_ You're going to hammer-on to the 9th of [A] the D.
[D] _ And then play 7 on the G behind.
_ _ _ Then you have 3 7s in a row.
_ If you're playing with your fingers, it's thumb, index, thumb, all on the same string.
If you're [G] using your pick, you'd be alternate picking, down, up, down. _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ Then 2 [E] 9s on the G.
Then we go back [A] to this theme, 7 on the [Ab] G, hammer-on [E] 9, [C] play behind, 7 on the B.
So, that first [A] phrase.
_ [D] _ _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ _ _
[Ab] Then you come to [Am] the next phrase.
[D] _ 7 on the G, [A] you're going to do [Gbm] a row back to the 7 on the [D] B.
So, it's just 1st finger, then row.
You can do a bar, but it's better to get that row in early. _ _ _
Then you're going to come to 10 on the B string. _
So, 7, 7, 10.
Then you play 10 twice, on the [Am] second one slide to 12.
[B] _ _ [Em] _
Then 12 [D] back to 10.
So, 2nd phrase. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Am] _ _ _ _ [D] Then you're going to come back to your 7 on the G.
_ Again, row to 7 on the B.
[Gm] _ Up to 8, that minor note.
Then 2 8s.
_ [Gbm] _ [Em] 7, 9 on the G.
[G] So, 7, 7, 8.
_ _ [Gbm] _ [Em]
Then the theme, the hammer-on.
[D] 7, G, hammer-on 9.
_ 7 on the B.
2 7s on the B.
Then you play it the other way.
Pull [Ab] off, 9, 7 [G] on the G.
_ 9 [E] on the D.

_ [G] _ _ _ [D] _ _ [E] _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ [Em] _
Then we start [Ab] again with a [G] 7, 9 on the [A] D.
[B] Hammer-on, [D] 7 on the G.
_ _ Play it again.
Then a 9 bend [E] release. _ _ _ _
2 [G] 9s, 7 on the G, 9 on the [A] D.
[D] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [E] And there's a little pause and we get 7 [A] on the D, [G] 10 on the A.
And [Eb] so the last phrase,
you're going to play 3 sets of 8 _ [Gm] _ on the B string.
So, _ _ _ _ _
[A] _ [G] you're playing this 8 on the B string,
it's sets of 2, 3 times.
_ _ _ _ [Gbm] _ [Ab] _
[G] _ _ 3 notes, a little [Gb] triplet.
On the 7 on the B.
_ _ Pull off, [Em] 9, 7 on the G.
_ _ Come back to the 9. _
_ _ _ _ _ [Gbm] _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] Twice, bend the second [E] one.
_ _ [G] 7 on the G, 9 on [E] the D.
_ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ [E] _ _ [Em] If you're playing on your own, it's quite nice to [Gbm] slide that one back to 4,
[Bm] so you're there for the B minor.
