Hi, welcome back to Step by Step.
In this song workshop I'm going to teach you how to play the classic Wild Thing by the Trogs.
[Eb] [A]
[E]
[A] This song starts with that instantly recognisable string bend and then it goes into three open chords A, D and E.
If you don't know how to bend a string then if you check out the Step by Step Beginners Modules you'll find more information there.
For this riff we're using the chords A Major, [Bb] D Major and E Major.
When you play the A you can either use your first, second and third fingers or if you prefer you can just hold them all [Ab] down with the one finger.
[Gm] The fourth, third and [A] second strings.
The riff starts with a bend on the third string at the seventh fret.
If you bend the note before you pluck it, so push the note up first, pluck [E] and release.
[D] It's [E] a slow release.
I'll do that again.
Bend the string first, pluck, [D] release.
Then [Am] you go to the A chord, strum it twice, strum the D [D] chord twice [E] and then the E chord.
[D] So when you strum that you strum [E] four down strums, a rest and then another two down strums.
So let's do all of that from the beginning.
Bend the string first, pluck, release.
[D] [A] [D]
One more time.
[B] [A]
[E] [N]
If you're a beginner and you're just getting the grips with your first few major chords then this is a great riff to practice using the chords A, D and E.
[A]
[E] [D] [A]
[D] [E] [A]
[E] [A]
[D] [E]
[Db] Start with the A chord, [A] strum twice, [B] to the [D] D twice, [E] to the E, strum twice, back to the [D] D.
And [A] again from the beginning.
A.
[E] [D] [A]
[D] [A]
[E] A.
[A]
[D]
Let's have a look at [B] the verse riff using one chord but not as easy as it looks.
[A]
This riff is based around that same A chord.
[Ab] So you just bar across those three [B] strings.
And if you start by just lifting your finger off so that the strings are open, strum one downstroke from the fifth string, from the A string.
[G] Then with your [A] finger on, strum, [D] off [A]
and then if you let that chord sound for seven beats.
So I'll do that again.
Two, three, four, five, six, seven.
Two, three, four, five, six, seven.
Two, three, four, five, six, seven.
Two, three, four, five, six, seven.
Well I hope you enjoyed learning how to play Wild Thing by The Trogs.
[B] That's a great song to learn for beginners if you're just starting out on the guitar.
And if you need any more information on those three chords or that bending technique, then check your song lesson notes.
Don't forget we love to hear any feedback or some suggestions that you may have [Eb] for this site.
I look forward to seeing you in the next song workshop.
Thanks for watching.
