Let me tell you the history of this song a little bit.
My wife actually gave me a book of poetry, but it was called The Stuffed Owl.
It was a book of bad poetry through the ages.
And I read it and I thought, you know, I bet I could write some bad poetry.
And so I wrote a little poem and I put it away.
And about a year later, I got it out and I looked at it and I said, you know, that might
be some bad poetry, but it's not a bad country song.
I don't know if that would go over or not.
I got together with Gary Strux, son of [B] Earl, and a great musician and songwriter.
And I said, what can we do to work on this?
So we worked on it together.
[E] And [B] I think we took the badness out of it.
And it's called Daddy [N] Played the Banjo.

The banjo come alive.
Sometimes I wake up at night and hear a [C#m] distant tune.
[B] The music would echo around my [F#] childhood room.
[B] And I'd sneak down the back stairs that he [E] never knew.
[B] And I'd grab a broom and make believe [F#] that I was [B] picking trees.
[F#] One day, Daddy placed my [B] fingers down upon the strings.
And [F#] he picked it with his other [B] hand.
We made the [F#] banjo ring.
[B] Now the music takes me back across the [E] yellow day.
[B] To the summers with my dad and the tunes he played.

I'm just telling lies about the things [C#m] I did.
[B] Because I'm the banjo player who never [F#m] had a key.
[F#]
[F#m] [B] Now I sit beneath the [E] yellow tree.
[B] And hoping that a kid [F#] somewhere is listening [B] to me.
Daddy played the banjo beneath the yellow [E]
tree.
[B] It rang across the backyard and wove a spell [F#] on me.
[B] Now the banjo takes me back through the [E] foggy haze.
[B] Where a memory of what never was became the good old days.
