Hey friends, Joe here at Reverb, checking out the verse chords of Michelle from the
Beatles.
Paul McCartney composition, although I believe Lennon wrote the bridge.
But Paul
wrote the intro and the verse, and we're going to talk about the composition of the tune
and kind of what the functions of the chords are, and some cool voicings that you can apply
to play it.
So the intro in the key of F minor is just going to be F [Fm] minor triad up here.
We've got one, three, and five.
And then an F minor major seven.
So just grab the F and
move it down to an [E] E.
[E]
[Fm] [E]
And then that major [Ab] seven goes to a flat seven, which makes it
an F minor seven, which just pretty much looks like a D shape here.
So we've got, [E] [Ab]
and then
you know where this is going, that flat seven goes down to [D] a sixth.
So [C] we've got a chromatic
line [F] going from F to [A] E to E [Ebm] flat to D.
[D] And then the same two [Fm] notes on top, the third
and the fifth.
[Ab] [Ab]
[Db] And then we've got a B flat minor seven over F.
So just barring here.
And then we're going to grab this melody [F] line on top,
[Bbm] [A]
[B] and then go into a C major.
[C]
[F] So the
whole intro, one, [B] two, three, four.
[Fm]
[C] [Ab]
[D] [Db] [Bbm]
[C]
Now we get to the verse.
First chord of the verse
is F major.
Very cool, since we had this kind of very minor intro, and then we have a major
verse.
And then for the bridge, it goes back to minor.
But we're just going to learn the
verse today.
F major, [F] B [Bbm] flat minor seven.
Very, very Paul McCartney move going to the
four minor.
And the seven in there really adds a great color to that four minor as well.

[Bb] [Bbm]
And then we [Eb] have an E flat sixth chord, root, [G] third, [C] sixth, [B] and another root on [Eb] top.
[Cm]
Great
chord.
And that falls down to a D diminished.
[F]
[Ab]
[B] And the diminished sets up a full step down,
a C major, which is the five, five chord of the key.
[C] From the five, we go to another diminished
[B]
on B.
It's actually the same chord as the D diminished that we came from.
As diminished
chords are built on minor thirds, they're unique in this way that if you stack minor
thirds, then if you move the shape in minor thirds, [A] it's the same chord.
It's a [B] different
inversion.
[Ab]
[B]
[Ab] It's the same chord as this, same notes.
[B]
But the way that that resolves [C] to here
from beneath has such a different feel to it than the way that it resolved [D] from above
[C] before.
[Ab]
So if you're writing a tune and you [Abm] find that a diminished chord works at a certain
spot, then all of a sudden you've kind of unlocked a [B] whole new [Eb] path because you can
go, you can take that a minor third up or two minor thirds up, and then you can play
that same chord.
And it could still have the same function, or it could also unlock
another idea.
If you're playing in a different shape, naturally you might be able to visualize
a different [Ab] resolution.
[B] You know, [Bb] you might, [Ab] if you're playing it up here, [B] do [Bb] that.
Whereas
if you're [B] playing it here, [C] you might do that.
So it's like, even though it is the same notes
circling over each other, it'll unlock a different visualization for you to have another option
in your tune, which is very [Fm] interesting.
