October of 67, round about the 5th I think of October, and we just started the Axis album.
There was no beginning in Empto albums, it was just a constant recording whenever I had an opportunity.
This is Bold As Love and we're about take 14, we're almost there, and it's interesting to hear the development of the track.
[Eb]
[F] [Fm] [Db]
[Ab] [Ebm]
[Fm] [Db]
[C] [Db] [Ab] Jimmy's guitar is obviously a little rougher, [Bbm] it's not quite formulated there, but [Gbm] the basic idea [Db] is very good.
[Ab] [Bbm]
[Gb] [G] [Ab]
[Eb] And this is by [Fm] no means the final guitar sound, [Db] we've changed it as we [Ab] got closer to the master, [Eb] I've modified the sound [Ebm] of the guitar.
[F]
[Fm] [Db] [Ab]
[F] [Eb] [F]
[Fm] Noel's bass, once again one can hear [Ab] that it's not quite there yet.
We'd learn the tunes in the studio [F] actually, Hendrix would show me the tunes, [E] I'd learn them on the guitar normally.
And we'd suss out the tempo, and we'd actually just run through it, [Ab] by which time Chaz had actually recorded it.
[C] One of the [Ebm] innovations that we made on Axis was, [Db] instead of the drums being [Gbm] recorded on one track [Ab] in mono, it's now stereo.
[C] It's now we [Ab] split them up so Mitch has a better shot.
[Eb]
[F] [Cm] [G]
[Ab] [Ebm]
[Bb] [F] [Fm] [Eb]
[Ab] I must admit from my side I enjoy spending time in the studio to see what you can do, and [Ebm] what's possible.
All the ideas [Fm] are just developing, there's gonna be a [Ab] massive change that's gonna happen when you hear the [Eb] final mix.
[Bb]
We do some very interesting [Fm] stuff.
[Ab] And once it was in the camp then you started [Eb] mucking with it, [Bb] for the various effects and things.
[C] I mean Sgt.
[Ab] Pepper just, that started [Cm] the ball rolling [Db] really.
[Ab] Everyone [Eb] was listening to everyone else's [Fm] records and trying to, [Abm] how do they get out of that.
[N]
Right up to this point, we were this close on that tape, but what actually happens is, when we play the final version, we actually cut the tape almost at that spot.
And we said to Jimmy, you know we've got this really nice thing we want to play you.
Jimmy, come and have a quick listen to this.
My assistant and I had been experimenting with phasing.
So we came up with stereo phasing and we applied it to Axis.
This is what we got to, was this.
[Ab]
